'72 Tilt Steering Column Rebuild Attempt

Anyone know how these covers come off? The manual skips over the cover and goes straight to getting out pins, which, of course, you can't remove with the cover in place. Any ideas are appreciated, I am pulling my hair out. That cover will not move at all, will not rotate or slide forward or back at all.

Soak the area between the sheet metal and column with a ton of penetrating oil and let sit then if you are lucky you can use a hammer and screw driver to very lightly tap the cover off hitting on the edge of the metal. This is going to take a ton of paitence and time not to wreck the edge of the metal. Some are easier than others.

I would seriously attempt to buy that tool, or make it. it will make the removal soooo much easier, plus you could rent it out to the board. plus soaking it with PB powerblaster will help as stated already

I made my own pin removal tool out of bolts and nuts

Re: '72 Tilt Steering Column Rebuild Attempt

Thanks guys, I did get that part off. I did pretty much what you said, PB Blaster, heat, rubber mallet, dead blow hammer (all really soft downward swipes), strap wrench......eventually I saw that seam start to come apart a little........and then it was off. Now I am trying to decide if I should get it powder coated or just spray paint it.......I want it black, but the stock ones I have see which are in really good shape seem to have a a specific......I don't know anything about paint, but.....tone or glimmer......or something. Anyone know?
