Need measurement for 12 bolt axle length.
Can someone give me the total length of a 12 bolt axle from the outside edge of the flange to the very end of the shaft?
I am hoping to convert my '70 6 lug axles over to 5 lugs. I am planning on searching the wrecking yard, but need to know the length. Thanks!

They should be the same length. Nothing later than '72 will fit though.

There are 2 different lengths in our trucks. They switched over in mid-70. You could have either axle. You really should measure yours to be sure. The 71-72 are longer then the 67-early 70 axles. Make sure you get the right one... I have both in my garage right now. The housings are different lengths. I will measure the 71-72 axle and post it for you.

The rear I have right now is a '70 model. Wouldn't the '68 axles be the same length?

70 could use either the early or late width of housing. So far at least all of the 70 housings I have found up here in Canada have used the late width and have accepted the 71 and up 5 lug axles

my 71-72 axle length is 31 3/8 from spline end to the outside of the flange. They might or might not be the same. You will have to measure your housing. Measure from the inside of the backing plate flanges across. The 71-72 housings are 58 between there. the others are around 54 I think. I am looking myself for a 5 lug 71-72 axle as one of mine was frozen and the bearing surface was all pitted.
