89 Burb overhead console bracket removal ??
Hi, I have some rust under the console bracket (antenna mount hole leaked a bit apparently) . . It would be nice to be able to remove it, clean the rust, and put it back on.
Any advice? I don't see any easy way, and maybe no way, to remove those weird rivets so that I could reinstall the bracket. Maybe a nutsert? There's definitely not room to stick a nut behind the locations where the rivets currently are. Thanks for any/all advice. |

Noone? Some further research suggests the plastic rivets might be common on japanese cards, and can be popped out with a door panel removal tool (like a spatula with a fork in it).
I'd hate to start popping them loose, then realize I can't get any plastic rivets to fit or otherwise replace them to re-mount the console bracket. . . |

I agree on the pic issue.
You are talking about an over-head rack for CB or something? I know that you can get plastic screws for large side mirrors (so that the screws fail and don't bend the doors). I would check with your local NAPA or whatnot. Otherwise take some pics! |

Re: 89 Burb overhead console bracket removal ??
Hello: of course I should have posted photos first. My apologies for that. I am trying to do this from my phone, so I hope the below links to the photos work properly. Thank you for your input.

Ok, gotcha, this is the overhead console thing. Found some pics here that might help others.
I would think you could grind those rivets off then either use rivets to put them back or self tapping screws, or as you say, some kind of expanding nut. They just tie into the support cross-member thing. |

No problemo. Like a lot of tools, you don't need one often but when you do it's right on time.

I drilled mine out at the junk yard then didn't want to drill holes near my suburbans ceiling so I welded my bracket up. Cheap HF welder and my mediocre skills and it came out great.
