Re: Idles rough in gear
How old is the motor and how many miles on it? It sounds like a vacuum leak, bad carb, or worn out cam. In my case it was a worn out cam.

Re: Idles rough in gear
Vacuum leak, timing, air fuel mixture screws, worn out carb. This assumes the compression and cam and timing chain are good. Also if the torque converter is engaging then the idle RPM is too high or possible a bad converter.
Once you can get it to idle, get friend to hold the foot on the brake while in drive and chock the tires, then try and fine tune the air fuel screws to smooth the idle out a bit more.

Re: Idles rough in gear
Before you sink a bunch of money into what it might be, get yourself a simple vacuum gauge and hook it up to the right side port on the front of you carb. You'll be amazed how many things you can diagnose with this simple tool. I'm attaching the chart of what the readings will tell you, so good luck.
