Share your steering box wisdom.
Ok, so the old 1965 C10's manual steering box has about 7 inches of play that won't adjust out. Oddly, the rest of the front end parts are pretty decent.
The box has a lash adjuster on it, which I tried 1/4 turn at at time, and it worked for about 20 miles, but now it looks like the shaft that the pitman are is attached to is actually moving downward, coming out the bottom in other words. WTF? So, rebuild kit? Reman box? Not super interested in a power steering setup. Thanks in advance. |

Re: Share your steering box wisdom.
I'd remove that old box, put it in my wife's truck and take it to orielly and get a new one. Whats the question again?

Problem is, most places don't list nor can get a manual steering box. Orielly's, Autozone and NAPA do not list them.

red hat steering gears did mine. Great people to deal with and 100% warranty. All you have to do is install the unit.

Re: Share your steering box wisdom.
Mine was so bad that when I poured gear oil into it there was a noticeable drip drip as it tried to empty it self. Darn steering wheel was also pretty well gone because it was so hard to turn.
A 67 PS box and an adapter plate for mounting it was all that was needed. Of course after a collapsible shaft and fabricated pump mounting bracket the story gets longer. |

Re: Share your steering box wisdom.
I've bought a new dual master cylinder and brake wheel cylinders from Rockauto. I never had a problem with any of it but if I was replacing a steering gear I would at least look into the Red Hat option.
