K20 owners - parking brake cables
Hey guys, what parking brake cables are you using? I have a 71 GMC K25, stock springs, Dana 60 (stock Axle). I got a set from Inline Tube (BTS6943) and the rear cables are about 4" too short. When bolted to the backing plates they will not come close to the slotted mounting holes on the frame.
Another question, do your stock cables work with a 2" lift? Thanks for your help! Bobby |

Re: K20 owners - parking brake cables
Stock cables work up to 4" of lift. When you get into 6" you need longer. last truck I did a 6" lift on I figures how long they needed to be and had Inline make them. They worked out perfectly

Re: K20 owners - parking brake cables
Many years ago my local Ace hardware had aluminum ends they could crimp onto the ends of cables. They made a replacement parking brake cable for me and it's still working. Cheap, too. Last time I checked, they no longer carry the right pieces. You might have a hardware store nearby that can fix you up.

Re: K20 owners - parking brake cables
thanks for the replies. Stocker, my hardware store has nothing close to what I need. I'll call Inline Tube & see if I can send these back & get some longer ones made. Special K you wouldn't know the length of a stock rear cable would you?

Re: K20 owners - parking brake cables
no, not off hand. But I remember when I ordered, they have all the specs. They must have messed up on yours. This was 12 or so years ago and I remember the guy was resistant to doing custom work. He said, "We only deal with OEM spec equipment". I said, "Can't you take the OEM specs and just add 2"?", I also got them to make a braided stainless rear brake hose at my custom length with the proper fittings (Skyjacker's longer hose kit provided the wrong gender axle end in the wrong size for the rear).
I'd get back with Inline, with your cable lengths handy and have then tell you what their specs say... if they are hard to convince they sold you the wrong pieces.

Re: K20 owners - parking brake cables
That's the exact set I ordered. The rear cables are about 5" too short. Sent them back to Inline Tube, they are going to make me a longer set. The tech guy said the cables were the correct ones but I think they're confusing them with the 2wd trucks. The 2wd truck frame mount is below the lower frame rail and (I think) slightly behind the cross member. The 4wd truck frame mount is in front of the cross member & in between the top & bottom frame rails so it has to be longer.

Re: K20 owners - parking brake cables
That is the set I used on a stock height 72 Chevy K20 with Eaton reared.
Both Inline and the Right Stuff Detailing don't realize all the differences between our trucks, Chevy, GMC, K,C 3/4 1/2 LWB SWB. I have helped The right stuff detailing out many times. On brake lines and fuel lines, if they don't have it and you have a good original line, they used to make it for free so they have the pattern. |

Re: K20 owners - parking brake cables
71 GMC K20, Dana 60 rear
the rear cables are 33 &1/4" long (measuring the outer cable length) My guestimate is they are 5" too short. If someone could measure some stock cables that would be a great help. |
