Front Axle question

I have a completely rebilt front axle for my 1964 k10. I have decided I want disk brakes and swapped the front axle out for a 1976 axle. My question is do you think I could sell the axle as a whole or do you think that their would be better just to use what i can from the 1964 axle in my rebuild of my 1976 one?

Re: Front Axle question

I doubt that you are going to be able to sell a closed knuckle drum brake Dana 44. I would just use the gears and bearings in the '76 housing.

Re: Front Axle question

There was a member here who was able to swap disc brakes onto a closed knuckle axle. It did look like a bit of work but came out super clean. Not the easy route but definitely cool.

Or as Captain said, running the newer housing is the quick and easy deal.

If you do end up getting rid of that closed knuck axle, put it up on the parts board. There are guys out there looking for that stuff for their restorations.

Re: Front Axle question

you can use all the 76 parts on your 64 axle. you have to swap all the outer stuff. spindles-hubs/disc/locking hubs. the spindle bearing has to be changed to a bronzed bushing like the 64 spindle or turn your outer axle stubs down a couple of thousands to fit the needle bearing. ck out my build for pics and info.
