Column shifter jumps upon acceleration
What might cause my column shifter to jump on initial acceleration in drive gear? It does not jump out of gear, the shifter column (handle and attached column) flops.
Thanks |

Re: Column shifter jumps upon acceleration
I don't know the shape of your truck, but worn , broken cab mounts will do it also..

Re: Column shifter jumps upon acceleration
Also incorrect auto shifter linkage will cause it to move. The correct linkage uses a bell crank from frame rail to trans. Short story is as the engine and trans torques over on acceleration it moves the linkage upward too thereby moving the shift lever. Over the years the original shift linkage may have been lost and a direct shift rod used instead. It works. Just not like original.
I don't have pics with me but you can search for auto shift linkage and see pics of what the right linkage looks like.

Re: Column shifter jumps upon acceleration
I found this thread. There are many.
http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...+shift+linkage The pics are of the oe linkage. I think you can see how it works to control the torque movement vs the shifter. There are aftermarket linkages that are of the direct rod type and they do work but there is the lever movement issue upon acceleration.

Re: Column shifter jumps upon acceleration
Motor mount is my guess.
It's easy to check. Open hood. Start engine and hold your foot on the brake pedal. Then drop it in drive and goose the throttle whilst holding the brakes hard. Watch to see if the engine moves around when you go from park to drive. |

Found my problem. PO left bolt out or didn't install. Does it use just a bolt or a Bolt & Nut? 350 and I know about the power steering crazy bolt set up

Re: Column shifter jumps upon acceleration
The bolt is a 7/16" std. thread about 1" long with a thick flat washer or just use 2 regular flat washers and a lock washer. These bolts are often a pain in the shorts to get in if the holes were not enlarged to at least 9/16". Good luck, Capt.
