If You Could Buy a New One

If you could walk into a dealer, and order a brand new 67-72 Chev or GMC truck, how would you order it? Year, engine, trim level, options?

For me, the perfect one of these trucks would be a 67 (cause I don't like the fender lights), short stepside, (easy to park, cool looks) 250 six with a 3 on the tree and overdrive. I'd order power steering, manual brakes, and the highest trim level available, cause I like the bling around the windows, and the lighter. Not sure about AC, cause I like things light and simple.

What about your perfect order?

67, CST (for the buddy's) short, fleet, with the biggest engine available, 327. Bright red (I think, thats the color.. Looks like orange now.) Basically my truck, just shorter, and no Custom Camper.

Assuming that modern power trains would be on the option sheet:

C20 long bed, A/C, power brakes and steering, leaf spring rear, with a Duramax diesel and Allison automatic. Steel wheels with poverty caps.

Pretty easy for me:
-72 Chevy Cheyenne Super 'shorty' (Swb/Fleet)
-Blue/White (upper/lower mldgs)
-402 BB/Auto
-Ps/Pb/Air/Tilt/SRW/Buckets/Am-Fm/3:73/Posi/Tilt/Tach/Shoulder Belts/cruise/Chrome bumpers/.......and of course, the ultra-rare Corvette option.
....that about covers it....lol.

If it was 1967, itd be a loaded swb CST, silver with red interior.
If it was 1972, itd be a loaded swb cheyenne super, all black with red buckets and console.
Both trucks with the biggest motor and automatics id guess, just so there was never any binding of the linkages....

'70 (because I like the '69-'70 grille) long bed with 396, automatic, 3.54 Max Trac, PS, PB, air, cruise, tilt, CST package with buddy buckets (black with houndstooth), Hugger Orange with white top and center. The stock wheels and tires wouldn't last long.

I would copo a 1972 Cheyenne Super Custom Camper K20 4x4 a/c, tilt wheel, factory sliding rear window, two tone paint white/olive/white/ olive, upper trim and with lower wood grain trim. chrome bumpers front and back. Ok I confess I just bought one. It is the one I could only dream about owning and now here it is!!! What a wonderful blessing and birthday present!

Thank you Outfield. I had to buy some money and sell a few trucks but it all came together for me. I never thought I would own a 3/4 ton 4x4 Super. odometer reads 43K miles un documented.

There certainly wouldn't be anything wrong with that truck and it's nice to fantasize about being able to order one. In reality I was a senior in high school in '70 and in January my choice was a '70 C20 long bed fleetside, white top over light red. It was a 307, 4.10 axle, 3 speed, white front bumper, step bumper, am radio, 7.50-16 split rims with painted hub caps and mud and snow Good Years on the rear, black vinyl bench. It was on the lot of a local Chevy dealer and called my name loudly. I visited it several times over about a 3 week period before I pulled the trigger. It was $2500 and my payment was $85 for 36mos. Being 17, my Dad had to cosign on the loan. Over the next year I added chrome front bumper, sliding rear window and ss below eyeline mirrors. On its one year anniversary (keep in mind I was 18) I bought a '69 Bryant Sports Lodge 8' slide in camper that the original owner used for one trip. That was an even $1000. The only problem with that rig was that I only kept it 3 years. I wish I had done like First Owner and kept it all these years. As a bit of a reality check, at 3 years old I had already done a valve job and the cab corners were starting to blister. When I sold it, I bought a '73 El Camino Conquista. Two bad decisions rolled into one. And I didn't take near enough pictures of it.

Well, I like 1-Ton trucks.

I would love a '72 C-30, Dual Rear Wheels, Short Chassis, basic model (no trim), Full Gauges, Tach, Cab Lights, Manual Steering, Manual Disc Brakes with a 292-6, 4-Speed and Red Paint with Black Interior.

Second choice would be a '72 C-10 4 X 4, Long Bed, and same as above, although with a 350, 4-Speed.

It's nice to dream, lol.

72 c-30 longhorn napco converted, 402, 4 speed, 4:11 posi's at both ends, Cheyenne Super, rear slider window, buckets/cup holder console, custom camper, dual battery, nl2 auxilary tank, AC, am/fm, tach, tilt, heavy duty suspension, power steering, power breaks, and front hooks. as for color, that's the hard part. I like the non white two tones, so it would probably be in 557 light olive over dark olive with dark olive interior trim, 558 dark blue/medium blue with black or parchement trim or 565 black over hugger With black trim. I know I'm not picky at all....

Well, today, I'd order a 71 k20, dark blue over medium blue with cab lights, Cheyenne Super, Custom Camper (keeping in mind that puts the nameplate on the fender in 71...!), blue custom cloth bench, wood bed, camper wiring, DG4 mirrors, 350/TH350, posi D60, PO3s and the 'standard' luxury items - ps, pb, a/c, tilt, am/fm, all that jazz.

Ask me again tomorrow, that all might change... I might go med blue over dark blue, or switch to a 72 for the purdy cc scripts... kinda like the subdued 69-71 custom camper nameplates though. Hmm. Only one, huh?

Looks like the overwhelming majority want a very high-option truck, which I guess is why trucks with full loads (options) bring the high prices we are seeing now, at auctions and even on Craigslist.

Can't do it. if I did I'd never drive it. the thoughts of driving a new truck off the lot with no miles on it would tear me up inside knowing what one would be worth with no miles in 'off the show room condition'. A lot of us would be shocked seeing the paint and how poorly the body panels fit compaired to how we try to get them to fit now, LOL.

1971 K10 SWB Cheyenne with auto and air. Like the ivory-billed woodpecker they are reputed to exist but I have yet to ever see a legit example with an authentic SPID. Hope springs eternal though.

71 (power brakes) GMC K2500 Sierra medium bronze with black interior, lower trim. 350 with 4 speed. Ps , ac, cab marker lights. Might consider a white cab.

Wait since 57taskforce said we could go Napco, same truck in longhorm with napco 4wd.

Its a toss up. One would be a 67 GMC stepside fully loaded with the biggest engine possible and standard transmission. The other would be (if they made it in 1967 would be the longhorn fully loaded with the biggest engine available.

I'll play . I'd order a '67 SWB stepside. Like mentioned before, if modern drivetrain were a option, it would be a 6.0 LS with a five speed. I'd order it with AC too.
