1979 short frame...is this frame bent or flared out?
I had a fella come look at this truck. Its a 79 short bed, nice original 1 owner, with a perfect bed on it. He pointed at this part of the frame and said it was bow or strain from being overloaded. Really?? Body lines look good and it drives great.
Anyone else have any info in if this is strain or the way they are??

True???.....I've seen the same "flaring" on a chassis here in Australia and thought must've been bent( cause seller said had a slight front end hit)...thought hit may have flared it a bit......dam it....passed it over just because of that!.....would've been right under the drivers seat area of cab...had me scratching head how could bent there but cab bolted to chassis mounts ok....

Mine has the same thing. I found a post on here saying it's clearance for the catalytic converter, and they're all like that after a certain year whether it got a cat or not.

Production parts often have to comprehend the packaging of all different components, even if they are not specifically required on that option content. It cuts down on the proliferation of part numbers. K

Re: 1979 short frame...is this frame bent or flared out?
Yeah that flaring in the frame is for the exhaust to clear the frame, I have several shortbed Squarebody C10's and they are all that way. Either the guy isn't really up on the C10 frame or he was just looking a excuse not to buy it.

Re: 1979 short frame...is this frame bent or flared out?
I just picked up a 79 GMC SWB last weekend. Saw this after I came home with her and thought WTH! Perfect timing for this post so thanks! I figured it was normal because the paint wasn't disturbed around it and the metal didn't show any stress.

Yep, it's from the factory. I have 2 short bed frames with it.
I noticed it as I was painting one of them today. |

Re: 1979 short frame...is this frame bent or flared out?
I could be wrong and I am sure Keith is right, but I always believed that trucks w/frames like this were hit in that side, in the front at least a little. Id just check for non-factory or moved front bumper and assorted brackets. Every truck I have had with this bend, had been tapped in the front.

My 85 had it... Don't remember what the 76 looks like under there.
The massive GM pancake catalytic converter doesn't fit without it.
