Clear fuel bowl sight plugs for Holley Carbs
Hello everyone!
Just thought I'd bring this up in case no one else has ever had this happen to them. I was working on my truck the other day trying to find out why my truck reeks of Gas after I shut it off....the first thing I thought was, I had a fuel pump diaphragm leaking. Well it wasn't so I had another Holley 700 that I had rebuilt and decided to swap carbs.....well, after removing the air cleaner and removing the fuel line from the carb, I noticed that my clear sight plugs had "Melted" so who knows how long raw fuel has been leaking on my hot engine.....talk about Devine intervention.....I thought the carb was flooding or float sticking. Anyway, glad I caught it before I had a bonfire! Ben

I have seen them melt too. I dont recall if genuine holley plugs melt or not but the cheapies sure do.
Idk if it's the ethanol fuels or not. My general rule anymore is too only use the clear plugs for tuning only then replace them with the solid plugs. Good thing you caught that before it got ugly.

If I recall right. Some of the street avengers came with clear plugs without any problems. Did you get genuine Holley plugs???

is the egr gasket leaking hot exhaust at the bowl or old heat stove pipe or choke parts. cracked exhaust manifold blasting heat at the air cleaner that then forces it at the bowl? header gasket leak.. You'd boil out the fuel before the bowl would normally get hot enough to melt even the el cheapo plugs something is blasting hot air at it.. find it. |

Re: Clear fuel bowl sight plugs for Holley Carbs
I'm running an Edelbrock Victor junior intake that
Blocks off the EGR passages of the heads. I have run A blend of 60/40 premium and AV gas in my tank a few times, but I doubt that would melt the plugs with as little as I drive this truck. But who knows. I've read that many Others have posted the same problem with ethanol fuels. Well, I'm just happy to have found it before it would have gone up in flames. Ben

I pulled a clear plug out of a relatives BBC 67 camaro with a big vic intake because he was having fuel issues on a good holley. I set the front plug aside for rocking the car and when I went to put it back in it wouldn't thread in. figured he must've stripped the threads as we all know it's easy to do. But a closer look as i wiped the threads clean and noticed they almost "wiped" off not much was left to even try to screw them back in. Most of the threads turned too a goo that was similar too uncured testors model glue. Funny thing is there was no signs of these leaking yet. I checked the rear plug and the same thing happened. although not as bad. These plugs were cheapies he thought would be cool replacements. And they were both too foggy/milky too use as site plugs. On a friends chevelle I found the genuine holley plugs with the same milky foggy look and i figured the same thing was happening I didn't pull these out but did suggest too the him that they should be replaced. This car has a air gap rpm intake. Now im not saying that it's impossible for heat to do this on other motors but I know it wasn't the case on the above 67. Like earlier I would only use them for tuning only then replace them with solid plugs.
