Tailgate Woodgrain and Letters
Replacing the woodgrain decal on the tailgate band,
Original letters are riveted on, the letters are in good shape and did not want to buy new ones, any ideas on how to re attach them? I heard someone tried JB Weld? A new band was $200 complete, or $70 for the letters and $15 for the decal. I bought the decal because my band and letters are in great shape. I took the band off and found the letters were attached with rivets. Ill post pictures as the work progresses. thanks for any ideas! ***Also what color paint is original for the upper and lower molding in appears to be semi gloss black but it could be faded***

Removed the Tailgate Band from the truck.

Drilled the rivet's, Removed the decal with a heat gun. The decal came off in pieces due to its deteriorated condition. The adhesive remover shown worked pretty good to get the adhesive off, Acetone didn't touch the adhesive.

Installed the new decal and cleaned the letters. I decided to go with JB Weld mostly cause I had it already. I JB welded the letters on the tailgate band taped them in place turned it over and put more JB Weld on the back. Let dry then installed the band on the truck. Looks good if the letters stay put! Did the whole job on a Sunday Morning for $20 Bucks!!

I used Loctite 3X construction adhesive from Home Depot. Grip the rivets with pliers to close them slightly then apply the adhesive sparingly with a tooth pick to the underside of the letters then push the rivets back through the holes and open them up with a phillips screwdriver, apply a smear of adhesive over the rivets. Weight them down until dry (overnight). The construction adhesive will glue to virtually anything and my last ones were done over 6 years ago. Good luck, Capt Roger
