Re: Junk Yarding in Pa.

I see you found one of my hidey holes.

Pretty many trucks up in there but not much too pick from them.
I've helped him out in the past a few times. he always remembers that when I have parts too buy.

There is alot too see there just gazing around ,even all the trains.

Ever since he got rid of the free roaming goats in the yard just about every time I come out of there I usually have a tick or two crawling on me.

Here is a flashed out veiw from a long while ago I'm pretty sure denny said the pic is from the late 80's.

You can see a blue 68 panel behind the blue & white truck.
The panel has awesome wood floor in it yet.

Your third pic is the only 4x4 in any yard around here.
It's a 71 k20 292 that had ps on it.
power brake 4spd truck....I do believe the am radio is still in it.

I really miss Hofferts jy. In Bernville now that was a place too day dream in...if they would let ya.

They just got in a 70 k20 4x4 a few days ago, its by the front office. Axles and engine already taken out. trans and transfer case was still in it. fender badges are still on it. I took off of it the original cigerette lighter, rear cab light, and heater hose bracket.

Re: Junk Yarding in Pa.

Ez pull also has a yard up near Allentown(never been too this one)
Also another in Myerstown pa.
Named grebles u pull it.
There was only a shell of a 72 at the grebles yard but plenty of square bodys.

There is also
Farnsworth salvage up near pine grove.

Auckeys salvage in orwigsburg.

Naftzingers salvage in auburn.

Bruce Moore's in Frystown

A to z u pull it in shoemakersville.
This place was on gas monkey garage when they had a special jag that Richard rawlings wanted badly.

Village motors in blandon

Chucks auto salvage in birdsboro

Harrys u pull it in hazelton

These are just a few off the top of my head that are within a hour from me. A few of the smaller yards around here all know me by name as I'm usually a frequent flyer at them and have been since the early 90's.

I was just at new Ringgold ez pull 2 weeks ago for s10 and mower parts and there was no new old trucks but it figures they would get one in when I can't make it there.
I like their prices.
I was waiting with a buddy too get in there first thing in the morning a few months ago when a disgruntled ex employee came and shot another over at the scrap yard.we had no idea what was going on over there.

There was 3 yards that sold out and crushed since the 90's

Fritzes in Birdsboro.this is the only place I heard of them actually auctioning off some of the old cars.
Those Swedish fellas from gas monkey bought up all the old caddies....some were super rough.

hofferts in Bernville....this place was unbelievable and had a sad demise....everything got crushed.
about 50 acres of car & trucks from the. 20's on up. Mostly complete since they let no one walk the yard and pick parts.
I lived next too the yard for a long while and spent alot of time as a kid hunting and playing in there.
Then when i got older and actually looked for parts occasionally they they would let me in without being escorted around in the old ford with a 30/30 bouncing around on the dash.
I know of a 69 that sits cause ole man Monroe bought it but never picked it up.

And ole' man henrys in birdsboro....been crushed for a long while I was too young but my dad new him well. Good memories in there.

I seen that but when I asked him about it he said that it was a friend of his and he just brought it there to take it apart. Cause I really wanted those fender emblems..... Might have to take a trip up there.

Go grab the cluster out of that big gmc, it probably has a tachometer and air pressure or vacuum gauge.

I gotta get out junkyardin' before the weeds, bees, snakes, and ticks (did I leave anything out?). It's a winter sport for me unless I'm in need of something specific like now. Heck, I have Crazy Ray's right in by town and it's the same with there. I'm a wuss...and just too dang busy that time of year. Less people in winter, too, and I like that! Something about a lonesome junk yard I just love.

Re: Junk Yarding in Pa.

I been to Hofferts many times, I loved that yard. I got to be friends with the lady in the office and she took us around in some beat up car with the 30/30. She knew we werent doing anything stupid and we didnt haggle with her prices. That was a great yard to go thru.

I also remember when grebles was ran by the two old guys, and the goats ran thru the property to keep the grass down. They were some good old boys also.

Bringing this back up with a few more local shots from the weekend.

The blazer is the only 67-72 in grebles yard.
Few good peices on it yet.

I drove through several states on my trip to Vermont two weeks ago. I drove past at least one small yard but there was no time to stop.

I love being in junkyards!

Re: Junk Yarding in Pa.

I miss the CA desert... There I could go look at all the trucks in the yards with absolutely nothing left on them worth picking, but without having to worry about ticks and chiggers. Much more pleasant. But you have to run thru in 10 minutes before you get a sunburn.

Re: Junk Yarding in Pa.

Around here there is all kinds of jy terrain.

Klingers is a open grassy field on a pretty good slope with very little shade.now that the goats are gone in the summer the weeds and grass get pretty tall between the vehicles but the loader keeps the access roads open.
There your dealing with snakes ,bugs, leafy poison and the sun. Then trying too mow your way too a part.
And the vehicle sit on the ground. So getting underneath anything requires a loader.

Then you have the grebles and ez pull yards. All stoned lots with the cars up on blocks like the blazer. These two places are like being in the desert in the heat no shade at all. But no bugs or weeds. Your lucky too find anything that's not a Skelton by the time you make it there.
Walking these places in the snow can be terrible. Stepping on hoods or trunk lids and your slipping twisting a leg and going down.then the hike.

There is a yard rite up the road from me.....it's basically swamp. Mud mud mud and water. Almost all year.

And a few others that have a little of each described.

There is a yard down the road. They don't let anyone walk. You tell them what you need and they go fetch it.
You can't even see the yard as it's up over a hill in a valley....this place kinda sucks.

Auckeys yard is laid out really nice. a differnt area for each and make and model it too is a desert in the summer and all up hill.also way expensive and almost all late model stuff.

I like the old overgrown woods and pasture yards but they are all but gone anymore.

Someone tried too keep that blazer on the road as long as possible as it's all patched up all over but now the body is practically in two peices.

Re: Junk Yarding in Pa.

About 15 years ago (think clunker bill), all the salvage yards around the Kansas City, Lawrence, and Topeka area were required to pare back. They had to drain all the gas, oil, and coolant out of every engine, transmission, differential on the site or be fined by EPA. Scrap steel prices were at an all time high, and with the urban areas looking for places to grow, they were overrunning some some of the salvage yard areas.

Salvage yards sold their scrap cars as fast as they could and closed their doors. We are down to a select few yards in our area and one one or two that actually have a few classic cars. There was one yard in Lawrence that had 150+ of 1940's through 1970's era cars and trucks and it "evaporated" within about a week. I would drive by it a couple times a month, and then one day, it was GONE. I shed a tear over that one, because I have a Studebaker and I KNOW there were some there, but I was not in a position YET to get mine going.

I miss the days of wandering out into the yards and searching for the miniscule parts that I need to make my stuff "perfect".

Keep posting yard pics so the rest of us can drool!

Even the "newer" car yards on have 100-200 cars and they shred the less desirable ones quickly.

I went to grad school @ KU, and you're making me cry. I bought my '69 from a guy up in Lecompton.

Do they still hold the big swap meet there at the east end of 19th St. the first weekend of May?

I think so. I haven't been to it in a number of years.

I spent one year using my 69 K10 pulling people out of the grassy area they thought would work as a parking area. Made over $250 that day.

Speaking of swap meets, Maple grove raceway is having theirs on april 8th this year. Always been a good place to score parts. Rather large hot rod swap meet.

I always look forward too the maple grove meet.
What i don't like is that it's so close too the carlise date.
go broke at one and don't go too the other

I usually say you don't go too a race track too find old truck parts....but I always find some.

You should almost be able too walk there.

I bought a lot of parts off of Dean Klingers including hood, door, sliding back window, wiper arms, washer fluid tank, and some more. Great place to get parts and I think it's really cool up there and a great guy to deal with and his parts are a good price.

I'm with Special K.
Here in SC the chiggers and ticks are vicious. Then add the possibility of bees, fire ants, and snakes? Oh, and then the summer heat. Sometimes I wait till it's raining to go to a couple places.
