12 bolt question
I'm about to order all the parts to rebuild the 12 bolt in my 67. I'm on the fence if I want to order axles or not. What is the stock spline on a truck 12 bolt axle? If they're strong enough for a weekend cruiser I'm not gonna change them. Thanks guys

Re: 12 bolt question
plenty strong enough for weekend cruiser. When I built mine i went ahead an replaced them on my 71 though because they were like $130ish a side and I had already done axle bearings and seals with the axle saver bearings & seals and they were starting to seep so I figured do it once do it all.

Re: 12 bolt question
You will need to slip the shafts out and see what kind of condition they are in after 50 years. Pay attention to where the bearing rides and see if there is pitting or grooving of the shaft.
I pulled a customers van apart today for a rear axle noise. Got about 2oz of oil out of it. Everything was burned up except the shafts (go figure). He just got off the freeway also. |
