fuel guage reading

I have a 71 gmc, replaced tank flot aassembly but the fuel guage doesn't work. ideas

Depends on where the gauge is sitting. Way past full usually indicates an open circuit. All the way to empty could indicate a short to ground in the circuit.

Take the sender unit out, connect the gauge wire, ground the sender unit mounting plate. Turn the key to on, and manually move the float, see if you get any response on the gauge.

Had the same issue. Gauge pegged to the right beyond full. New sending unit did not solve the problem. Gauge was bad. Replaced unit and all's well.
