1950 gmc number 1 on distributer cap
guys i need some pictures of where the factory located number 1 plug wire on a 1950 gmc 228, i know the firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4 and do realize i can bring up number 1 cylinder on compression TDC and start the firing order anywhere on the cap but i would like it in the factory spot on distributer cap, does anyone have a picture from a factory manual? i just got this engine unstuck after soaking it for some time and i checked for spark a few weeks back and had it at the points, i have no idea what the previous owner has done to/with engine. i have been all over google with mixed results. thanks!

Re: 1950 gmc number 1 on distributer cap
typically on a GM 6 number on the cap (rotor) points either to number one cylinder or straight forward

Re: 1950 gmc number 1 on distributer cap
Best I can offer after hunting though my stuff is to pull #1 plug bring #1 up on top compression and see where the rotor points if the distributor has not been out of the engine. That will be where you put #1 wire in the cap.

Re: 1950 gmc number 1 on distributer cap
thing is i don't know if distributor has been removed or not but my cousin sent me a picture of their 52 chevy and i will use that but double check at tdc with number one cylinder. get it running then do a compression test to determine if the 228 i getting yanked for later model 6 cylinder with 5 speed.

Re: 1950 gmc number 1 on distributer cap
It will run fine as long as you have number 1 cylinder on tdc, the rotor lined up with the terminal on the cap where you put number 1 wire and the rubbing block of the points on the tip of one of the lobes on the distributor cam so the points are open. And the rest of the wires placed in order and going to their correct plugs. You might loose a point at the GMC vintage truck meet for having #1 in the wrong spot but then you will know where the right spot is because the nit pickers will be sure to let you know.
Just had a light come on in the brain. Here, you will want to save this to your computer anyhow http://www.oldgmctrucks.com/photos/G..._AllModels.jpg

Re: 1950 gmc number 1 on distributer cap
i do realize you can start firing order anywhere on the cap, i prefer the factory spot and the wiring diagram you provided in the link shows the factory spot on the cap. right now its 180 out because i pulled number one plug and brought it up where the ball bearing on flywheel line up with pointer on the bellhousing on compression stroke. distributor is stuck in the block so i have it soaking right now and saturday i will get back to it and drop distributor back in the block in factory position.
thanks again! |
