Help, need specs to ship truck

I bought a 1955 series U5700 LCF cab and chassis.
I need specs such as how wide, how heavy. And any one know how to ship the truck from Appleton, WI to Chicago, IL?

I would Google a local freight broker...I'm sure they could help you find a carrier.

Goodle a shipper and send a request. Within minutes you will have many more wanting to quote you. I did that with a truck I wanted to ship from Oregon to Idaho. All the prices seemed to be close, but need to make sure you deal with someone who is insured and bonded. Also make sure who ever is there when it is picked up gets the license and info off of the truck in case it goes missing.

Another question I have but didn't know where to post it so I'll ask here. I am assisting in a restoration of a 1949 3800 series. Motor is a 1955 235, missing most small bolt on parts. I have a chance to get a 1962 235 complete and running. So my question is, in a stock configuration, which motor is better and why?

I would go with the later model, I believe it has a better oiling system, hydraulic lifters and maybe even an integral oil filter. Probably still a generator, but easy conversion to alternator. Would still need to use the older style bellhousing unless you get the newer transmission too and want to use the tranny mount instead of bellhousing mounts.

The GM herritage center link will give you all the specs you need but the first thing any shipper will ask is if it runs and drives so it can be driven up on a lowboy or flatbed.
Runs and drives it may be a back haul for someone with a flatbed or lowboy who hauled something that area of Wisconsin from Chicago and figured to run back empty.

With no engine but as a roller means it will have to be winched on a trailer and that creates a hassle. No running gear means it has to be set on with a fork lift and that is a hassle to load and unload.

The good thing is you are looking at right at 200 miles.

I don't think many things changed on a 235 between 55 and 62. The 62 still uses the same Fram C4 oil filter cartridge that all 235s used in the can mounted to the manifold.
Most of the later ones did have hydraulic lifters but I don't know of any big changes.
One thing I would do on any of those before I put it in is check the cam gear and make sure it has a metal cam gear rather than a fiber gear. The fiber gears tend to give out at inopportune times when they get old. They run slightly quieter but you need a good ear to tell. Mine died on me the day I was headed to work to pack my tools up and move to a new job with Firestone. The gent I was working for helped me load my tools boxes in his truck and he drove me to my new job and helped me unload. He knew it was too good of a deal for me to turn down. My weekly income pretty well doubled.

Thanks for the information guy's, I had a chance to buy a 1962 235 motor but held off until I learned more about them. I hope it pops up again.

I got my 55 truck home and after 2 days of steam cleaning I shot it off to the blaster.

Question, will a 1963 230ci 6 cylinder mate up with a 1949 transmission? Casting #3788406

It will if you use a cast iron V8 truck bellhousing from a late 50's or early 60's truck and use a 168 tooth flywheel.

I googled and requested a quote to ship the 54 3100 from Placerville to Brookings Or. Got several hundred emails for months. Still getting them! The car carrier trailer for uhaul cost $138 and was a one way drop off. Our dodge 2500 3/4 ton pulled it like it wasn't there and still got 18 mpg. Lowest bid was $500-600 and weeks in transit. Never gonna call a shipper again.

So the motor in my brothers truck is a 1955. It is connected the 1949 GM trans. Any chance this 1955 235 I6 bell/clutch assembly will mate up with the 1963 230ci 6 cylinder? Or is the 1955 V-8 bell matched to 1963 230 I-6?

194, 230, 250 an 292 Sixes have the same bolt pattern as the V8.

This is the front side of the six cylinder bellhousing out of my 51 1-1/2 ton that will bolt to 216, 235 and 261 engines from 48(and maybe earlier) to 62 when the last 235 was made.


As you can see they will not interchange.

Back in the mid 70's when the 194 that was in my truck when I bought it for 75.00 and drove it to work the next day gave out due to be worn out we pulled the 283 out of my T bucket,loaded it in the back of the truck, took it to the shop where I worked part time an swapped it in on a Saturday. My buddy built the front mounts and the bracket to space the steering out. That was 40 something years ago when I moved a lot faster than I do now. We unbolted the six from the bellhousing, pulled it and swapped the flywheel and clutch to the 283 and put it right back in the truck. It took longer to unbolt the nose than to swap the engine .
