Pinion seal replacement

I need to replace the pinion seal on my '66 C20 because it started leaking and after searching I have found a number of different ways people say to do it. Does anyone know the proper procedure to replace the pinion seal on the HO52 rear end?

Re: Pinion seal replacement

Mark it with paint before you take it apart.

Clean and dry the splines, light coat RTV on the splines and some RTV behind the washer.

Loctite on the nut threads.

Return it to the same spot (couple of daka-daka's on the impact, not much).

It actually takes a LOT of force to compress the pinion crush sleeve at all.

Re: Pinion seal replacement

A guy sold me an 82 Jeep and I found out rear seal was leaking in the AMC20 because the nut had backed off. New seal and nut and nut staked and good to go. Saw the guy in a store and he exclaims "Pinion seal" and walks away. I think someone had told him his rear end was shot.

I also changed the seal in the 12 bolt that's in my truck now. No more leak.

Re: Pinion seal replacement

The 20-30 series does not use a crush sleeve. It has a spacer between the brgs. You can do what Skinny says or tighten the nut to about 200 foot lbs. & on to the next cotter pin hole. The seals are on the inner side of the flange. You can remove the 5 bolts & the flange & replace the seals. There is a thick cork gasket between the flange & housing. you need to replace it or use a thick coating of RTV.
