Muncie SM465

I have a 71 chevy C10 2 wheel drive. I want to remove the Muncie SM465 standard tranny and replace it with a turbo 400. What is the best way to take it off of the engine?

1. remove the gear shifter - push down on the shifter retainer & twist counter-clockwise, it will pop up & you can pull the shifter out

2. remove the drive shaft by unbolting the front u-joint from the trans.

3. Remove the transmission - the trans has 4 bolts that hold it to the bell housing, two of the four are on the inside of the bell housing. remove the dust cover on the bottom & you can see them. Place a floor jack under the trans & slide it out of the clutch / bell housing

4. Remove the clutch linkage - take the return spring off, it will basically fall apart

5. Remove the bell housing. on the larger trucks, the bell housing has 2 rubber mounts on either side that support the rear of the engine & the trans. I assume the C 10's do also. If this is the case you will need to support the engine (floor jack under the oil pan with a board & carpet to prevent damaging the pan). Remove the 6 or 7 3/8" bolts that hold the bell housing to the rear of the engine

6. Remove the clutch pressure plate & disc - remove the 6 bolts around the perimeter of the pressure plate - careful - the clutch disc will fall out.

7. Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft

I saw your post and was wondering if you would part out the SM465 transmission? Another thing to watch on the shifter ,the roll pins don’t go end to end . I don’t know how you are supposed to get them out. I started to pound it out and it ended up just expanding and chipping and cracking the top of the cast housing . I am going to try and figure out how I can repair it . Just wondering what you were going to do with the transmission. Thank You

Were you trying to remove the roll pins to get the shifter out? If so you just have to put it in neutral and push down and turn on the ball shaped area at the base of the shifter where it enters the top cover. Once the ball turns the shifter will lift out.

Yes I was, it makes sense now how the shifter comes out .Do you happen to know if there is anything in the transmission attached to the cover ? The chip is out of the top but when I put a new roll pin in there the sides seem to stay in there pretty tight and the other side is tight. I guess every roll pin I ever have run across you push it out, so I guess I learned the hard way.

The only thing on the bottom side of the cover is the shift rails and forks. If you want to pull the cover to check everything out. Put it half way into reverse and take all the top cover bolts out. With a little wiggling and cussing it will lift up and off.

How hard is it to put back on if it is that difficult to take off?

Mags, you must've really gave that thing hell to chip that cast iron. These things are nearly indestructible. Although I spent about 30 minutes trying to figure out how to get the shifter off too.

Well like I said roll pins usually almost always get pounded out and what happened is I really pounded it and it ended up going in the middle of the pin and expanding it . The funny thing which is not really funny after I found out how to take it off it took about 20 seconds. One side is really tight and the other I put a new pin in and it seems tight . The only thing is the very top is chipped.

I had my top cover off early in the week to evaluate before rebuilding. I had the cover off in 10 minutes and it went back on even quicker.while it’s apart don’t bump the shifter. When you put it back together make sure the reverse idler gear is partly engaged (that’s what makes it spin the main shaft backwards ie. reverse) drop the cover on and bolt it up. Your Probably gonna want to seal the cover back up though if you take it off. It really isn’t hard at all. The cover might weight 30 lbs it’s not heavy. Maybe you can post up pictures of where it chipped?

Mags I would go to a junkyard or check craigslist in your area for a SM465. They are dime-a-dozen. GM made them for like 45 years or something. You could probably get an entire trans for $100. Then ya have spare parts too. I grew up right outside Reading PA and I know there's a lot of good u-pull-it junkyards up there. Or the Carlisle Swap.

Even if I could find a cover somewhere at least the shipping wouldn’t kill me . I talked to a guy from a company called Driveline and gear last Friday he told me that one side would hold it plus the side that’s chipped the pin is still tight on the sides. If I wasn’t in such a hurry the other day I would have done a search on how they come off.

do you have the broken piece...?
if so, you can pull the cover and have it heli-arced back on with Ni-99 filler rod
it would have to be disassembled so that it could be cleaned and prepped for weld
I have repaired a lot of cast parts....a good welding shop can do it easily

have also rebuilt several 465s...not difficult to remove the top cover

There must have been three or four little pieces . I might have located a cover , are they all the same? I have read taking the cover off and putting it back on can tricky? Thanks for your help.

I have a couple of 465s out back....unfortunately the top neck is broken on one...the other is complete out of a parts truck I bought...not sure if it's good...I haven't been inside it yet....if it's good I wouldn't want to part it out...

If you put the transmission about halfway into reverse..the cover will come off without too much trouble....put it back in the same way....the reverse shift fork has to go way down in the case to engage the reverse slider...a little tricky the first few times...
