1970 C30 Car hauler Buildish thread.

Well I thought it was time to start a build thread. I finally picked up my first real truck its a 1970 C30. I was told it started life as a wedge truck that had been stretched into a dovetail flatbed truck. The 67-72 Chevy truck has always been my favorite body style truck. I have wanted to build one for years but I could never justify owning a truck. I have always been a jeep / car guy. I mostly build rock crawlers and race cars. But I have always had to borrow a truck and rent a trailer if I need to pick up something big or buy a new project. So I finally decided to build a truck of my own. I decided I wanted a tow rig but I did not want a trailer. So I started looking for a rollback but everything in my price range was a ford or a square body. So I started looking for a 67-72 C30 flatbed or dump truck that I could convert into a dovetail car hauler. I spent a few months looking for the right project I missed out on a few really good deals. But I finally came across exactly what I was looking for It was almost everything I wanted in a truck. It need a lot of work more than I wanted to do to it but for the price and the complete bed already done I picked it up.

My plans so far for the truck are to fix the rust, Paint it, new wheels and tires upgrade to hydroboost. Disk brakes all around, refresh the engine, replace the trans. Convert to fuel injection. possibly modify the bed, Tail lights, maybe air ride?

The next day I Cleaned it up, I probably gave it its first bath years it had mold all over it. Believe it or not it had more paint on it before I washed it. Then I took it to the DMV.

Well last week I started digging into it I removed the carpet to find It had more rust then I thought it had. I knew it need rockers and cab corners. But after digging it to it it needs the complete roof replaced the complete floor/ kick panels etc replaced.

So this week I scored a decent cab Its in a lot better shape than the current one. It still need inner and outer rockers, cab corners rear floor brace/ floor section as well the a patch panel in the windshield frame and the dash welded back in.

I also picked up a Nv4500, The current SM465 need completely rebuilt. Low, 1st and 2nd are on there way out. One or more of the bearings are gone I found a ton of metal and bearing parts in the bottom of the transmission. when I changed the oil. So I decided it was better to upgrade to the nv4500 then rebuild the SM465.

Welcome to the board! That will be a nice truck when you get it done. Is it a big block truck? You might want to check that NV4500 out to make sure it has had the updated mainshaft installed. They had a problem with the nut coming loose that holds the overdrive gear in place and the gear would back off, and then no overdrive.

Thanks! small block 350, I plan on doing the upgrade.

Well I finally got some free time. I ordered all the replacement parts I think I will need to fix the cab rust. I ordered the inner and outer rockers, the cab corners, rear floor, Front Door Pillars, Rear of the Door Pillars, and the Complete Rear Cab Floor Support.

I also built a Forward Tip cab dolly. I used some scrap electrical conduit that I had leftover from a few other projects. I like using electrical conduit for temporary bracing. I will also use it to brace the cab when I start cutting on it.

Unfortunately my fancy tube bender kinked the thin wall tubing. But it still has a decent radius so it is easily tipped over.

Not much of an update I have been super busy with work and other small project and a little renovation.

I started tearing into the cab. removed the outer rocker.

So I decided to drill out the rest of the spot welds the mount the rear of the floor to the cab. I before I drilled them out I made some bracing.

So my current doors are shot so I picked up a set on CL That I thought were in good condition. But they had been poorly repaired. They replaced the outer lower skin and lap welded it together so I get to re do that and I may also replace the inner lower as well as it has a few small holes and speaker cut outs.

I also picked up a new fender that had been damaged right after it was installed its an easy fix my fender has a lot of bondo and rust.

That said I have been a bit sidetracked on the truck. I have made a bit of Progress. A few weeks ago my brothers audi Broke down about two hours away and AAA wanted $275 to tow it home so I got to use the truck a bit earlier than expected. So I had to get it ready to make the trip. It has a lot of problems. I started off by I cleaning it inside and out there was a trash bag and a half full of junk under the seat and in the storage compartments. Now that it was all cleaned up I had to getting it running good, well enough to make the trip. Someone had converted it to a 2 barrel carb and did a very poor job at it. The carb and adapter plate only had two bolts holding it in place and all the vacume lines had bolts in them. The pcv system was blocked off on the valve covers so oil had been leaking everywhere. I replaced the belts and changed the oil and topped everything else off. The taillights did not work. I did not know this when I drove it home the first time. I knew the headlights high low did not work as the footswitch plug is melted and only had low beams. But the taillights did not work. It had three different trailer light wiring harness tied together. They were also plugged to another 20 foot magnetic trailer light system that some how had a melted light. So I cut all that out and I also thankfully had a magnetic trailer light system that I bought to use to flat tow one of my jeeps. So cut it down and wired it up, However it took me forever to get it working as the truck has some kind of trailer brake system installed on it that I did not have time to mess with. So I got the lights working I went to air up the tires and 4 of them are 12 years old and who knows how old the rear inners are, they are super dry rotted. That said the truck made the trip without a problem other than there not being any barings left in the transmission and it whining all the way there and back. That said I forgot to get a pic of it loaded up.

Nice truck. Reminds me of when I had 70 chevy grain truck and I took the sides off and it was a flat deck for a couple of weeks. It was white aswell. Looking forward to seeing it all fixed up.

So my uncle wants to use the truck to haul his tractor. So I have not really made any progress on the cab. All the cab pics are from a few weeks ago. I have been getting the truck prepped for the haul. I have been cleaning it up going through the wiring I replaced the high/ low headlight switch and pigtail it was melted. I removed a bunch of random pieces of metal on the bed that no longer go to anything. I also cleaned up and reinforced a bunch of welds on the bed. I replaced the hinges on the side box all the others were broken and the door was held on by a chain and a strap. I also made some removable stake pocket D ring mounts so I can tie the tractor down to the bed with chain. I also bought some chain binders. I replaced the blower motor so the truck now has heat. I replaced some more hoses on the engine its now idles better. I also replaced one of the inner rear tires it had a lot of dry rot.

I hauled my uncles tractor to town the other day.

I drilled out the spot welds on the lower windshield frame to remove what was left of the dash. The guy I bought the cab off of used a sawzall to cut the dash out a made a mess of things.

I was going to try to weld the dash back in as it was an A/C truck but I think It will be easier to just remove the dash out the the white cab drill out the spot welds clean it up and weld it in. I also plan to harvest the pieces of windshield frame that was destroyed when he sawzalled the dash out.

Nice find, that truck cleaned up pretty well. Great work on the cab too. That is a really cool old barn too! That's nice to see you were able to haul the tractor for your uncle too. Get any more tractor on there and the truck may need a 2nd axle.

Thanks! It still needs a lot of work but its coming together. I am planning on installing a set load lifter airbags on the rear. I have also been contemplating installing a dana 80 with disk brakes at some point.

So last week I went to the junkyard everything was 50% off my plan was to pick up a newer c30 front suspension with disk brakes. However I left a few tools I needed to remove the suspension. So I ended up picking up a hydrobooster, a spare wheel and tire and Dual electric fans.

So yesterday since I was not able to pick up the front suspension at the junkyard. I had come across a guy parting out a 75 c30 with the JB8 brake system. I only wanted the control arms out. The guy said he would uninstall them that I could pick them up the next day for $150, however he was two and a half hours away. So since I was just picking up the control arms out I decided to take the wagon as It gets better gas mileage. So I get there and the guy had cut the front of the frame off instead of removing 14 bolts and cutting the brake lines. I now the frame and the front suspension are on the ground and its super muddy and there is no way to lift it up with just the two of us. The sun is going down and there is no way to remove the suspension as I did not bring my tools and he did not have what was needed to remove the control arms. Thankfully he offered to deliver it for gas money however there was still Know way for up to lift it up as is. We ended up backing his truck into a ditch and using a quad to drag it into the back of his truck. That said 9 hours later it was finally home With a few extra bits.

So today I started tearing it down it looks like the front brake calipers are newer as they still have stickers on them and the pads are new. So my plan is to clean everything up and repaint everything. Replace the control are ball joints, bushings, hub bearings and have the rotors resurfaced.

It was, Thanks! That said it was worth it. I have been looking for a set since I bought the truck in september. That said I picked up another good deal a tabletop Sandblasting cabinet for $50 it came with a upgraded gun and some extra hoses.That said it needs a little work, I need to replace the glass is looks like it was used without the film. I can get replacement glass at lowes for around $14 or so cut to size and new film glass protectors. I have already installed an led light bar. I may add some more lights I want it as bright as I can make it in there. I also plan to add a vibrating motor to help keep the sand in the bottom. A few air hose disconnects. I would also like to make the top open up as well. Right now it's just the side. I also plan on adding a air gun to clean off the glass and the parts I am working on. Right now I have my big shop vac plugged into it to keep the dust down but I think I am going to get a cheap bucket 5 gallon bucket shop vac to use that was I don't ruin it. I also made a dust collector for it to help save the shop vac.

There is dust on the glass but it does not get much better. When I first got it home I tried buffing the glass it made it a little better but not much.

Now back to the build. I got one side cleaned up I wire wheeled it then I blasted the areas that I could not get to with the wire wheel.

Then I sprayed them with eastwood fast etch. Hopefully that will get the rest of the rust, then I will paint them black. I need to remove the bearings in the hub still, then I will blast the hubs and send them off to be resurfaced. Any tips on removing the bearings?

Not much progress has been made I keep getting distracted. I have been doing a bit of gunsmithing. I also had to buy a few more tools and parts before I could move forward. That and I have been lazy on taking pics and updating the build. That said I completely disassembled the 75 c30 front suspension a few weeks ago.

Is there any difference between the 70 c30 steering box and the 75 c30 steering box is there any benefit in installing it? My 70 box probably has less miles then the 75 box any thoughts?

Also my front air bag mounts came in. I am still searching for the right set of are bags for the front. I found a set on ebay they claim they are rated at 5k for each bag and on there website the are listed at 5k each bag but when I try to search for the same bag at other websites they come up at 3800 lbs each. The bags that I am thinking about using are CTS chassis tech 3800 Air Spring Diameter 8.50" Closed 2.8" Ext 12.50" 5,000lbs bag 400psi. Anyone know of a 5k or more lb rated bag that is about the same size? I am not looking for a kit just the bags.

Then I proceeded to break my vise!

So I spent most of my day trying to fix it. But it looks like I will have to get a heaver duty vise.

I took some 1/4 plate and put it on the mill.

Then I welded it the swivel base with some stainless wire. Then I proceed to mill out a slotted radius for the clamp down stop.

I don't have any pick of it but I tried to clamp down the control are down and tryed to remove the bushings again and ended up bending the 1/4 plate and striping out the center swivel bolt hole. So I have to re drill and tap it and put a grade 8 bolt in it. Then I bent the plate back. So now I have two choices I can remove the swivel base and drill another hole and mount the vise in a fixed position or I can just use it as a light duty holding vise and get a bigger heavy duty vise.

So I did some more wire willing and got as much rust out of the pits as I could then I used some eastwood fast etch let that sit for an hour then I prepared it for paint.

I only spayed some of the fire wall as I am still doing some work on the upper part of it. I also sprayed the floor and inner fire wall as I still have some work to do around the windshield frame that and I want to por 15 the windshield frame lip as there is a lot of pitting there I plan to sandblast the area be for I por 15 it.

Thanks, I still have not replaced the vice. I really need to get this done. However I keep getting side tracked. That and I am running out of time for this part of the build. And my list keeps growing. My main goal for right now is to replace the cab so when I have the cab off I can replace the trans. but while I am replacing the trans I need to refresh the engine and while I have the trans out I need redo front suspension and steering, ball joints etc, while I am doing that I need to upgrade the brake system.

So unfortunately I am really starting to cut corners on the cab I just need to get rid of the rust and get it painted now. Normally in one of my builds I try to make it look factory perfect or if I am resto modding something I try to make it look like that it could have been factory. But I just don't have time anymore I need to get back to the 911 build soon as I plan on moving in a year or less. And it's killing me not to clean up all the welds on the floor and especially the side vent ducts it's driving me crazy but I plan to under coat that airea and it will never be see is what I am telling myself. That and the front floor pans that the PO replace are already all jacked up and super hacked. That unless I redo that, that whatever I do cannot be any worse. So if its not going to be seen it does not have to be pretty.


Any ways back to the build.

On to the side ducting for the fresh air vents I really wanted to remove the whole thing clean all the rust out and do it right. But with the time I have it could take a few weeks.

So I got side tracked as I wanted to mock up the master cylinder for the hydroboost conversion so I can drill my holes be for I paint the cab. So I need to make the front tilt frame removable and I could not mount the hydrobooster.

Hopefully some time this upcoming week if weather permits I will start removing the windshield and start removing the dash so I can cut the piece out so I can start stripping it for paint.

I have order most of what I need for paint.

And I just realized I don't really have much of a build breakdown or my goals and Ideas/ plans I have for this build. I summarized my first goals for this part of the build in my rant. and first post. But I have a ton planned for this truck about 20 different ms paint photo shops of ideas and around 300 save photos of of ideas I would like to incorporate. I have I list at the moment of 66 things That I need to do or plan on doing at some point in the future.

So just some of the things that I don't think I have talked about yet yet in this build. So I have stated I am converting to air ride I am in the front and helper bags in the rear. I plan on installing a compleat on board air system. I am still deciding on how it will go. The way I see it I will use a 20 or 30 gallon air tank and I can either use 2 or 3 standard 200 psi air ride air compressors or I can use a york air compressor and convert it to on board air use or I can buy a gas powered compressor system that you would see on a job site truck and remote mount it. That said I already have a york compressor that came on a 70 911 I had. But it probably needs rebuilt. I plan on having 4 air hook ups on the truck as well as a 50 ft hose reel. I would like a on board generator welder. I also plan on making the dovetail removable. One it would make the truck more drivable when I am not hauling. I think I would use it a lot more. The current plan for the dovetail is to make it removable where only one person can do it. One of my many ideas is to use four trailer hitch receivers that the dove tail would slide into. I would use 4 removable trailer jacks with wheels. I would also like to make the dovetail hydraulic at some point. I want two winches one for the bed and I would like a front which. So I would also like to build a heavy duty winch bumper. Lots of built in work lights around the truck. Better under bed storage. A secondary gas tank. I will also be turboing the truck however I am still deciding on how I want to do it. I have a hx35 I was going to put on another project I may use and I could make a reliable 500Hp with a mostly stock 350. or for the cost to turbo it I could just swap in a 6bt, Then down the road convert it to compound turbos. Just a few plan I have for it down the road well most of the big ones.

Any ways I got side tracked again. So back to paint I have ordered most of what I need so as soon as I get the dash in I will start to prep for paint. As for the paint I have been racking my brain on what color I want to paint it. colors I wanted to paint it. Celery Green Metallic, Fathom Green Metallic, Teal Green Metallic Brown Metallic. How ever I really don't have time for body work and I would not justify puting good paint and not spending time on the body work. That and I really wanted to keep my red interior. So I started looking for colors that I think would looks good with red interior that I could do cheap and not put a lot of time in to it, so Black, silver, white or red. I really hate the white. Honestly if the truck was any other color I would have left it as it was and just fixed the floors rockers a rust holes and left the patina. I love rat rods I built my first rat rod last year and sold to buy this truck. So after months of trying to decide what color to paint it. I decided to compromise. And paint it all four colors! Black, silver, white And red! My plan at the moment is on the inside of the cab, black below the window line with red accents, red on the inside roof A and B pillars. The door jams and firewall black. The outside of the truck will be silver... well almost. I plan on striping it down to bear metal and clear coating it. I found some clear coat made for bare metal. The problem with clearing over bare metal is no matter how clean you get it it will start to rust and it webs out. I plan on making it look like it has a brushed finish to it. Then I plan on painting the roof white with white rocker and I am considering raptor lining the rocker in white.

Kinda like this but brushed bare metal I really like the rat rod/ patina look.

Nice work. I know what you mean on wanting to make everything perfect. You have to do what you have to do and not grinding the hidden spots won't make it or brake it. Especially if you are keeping it to use. Nice score on the manifold too!

I don't see myself selling this one. It my evolve over time, but I don't see selling it. My main goal it to keep it from re rusting in the future. As long as I am not doing anything that will make it want to rust I am fine with it.

I am pretty happy with the manifold score. The only thing is it blocks the oil fill breather tube. Though that should not be a problem.

Also I finally broke down and bought a Vise. I really wanted a old Wilton. But I could not find one in goodenough condition for the right price that I wanted to restore. I really wanted an american made vise, but all the ones I could find where way more then I am willing to spend on one. So I made another compromise. I went with the brand I really wanted even though they are now cast in china and finished in the US. And from what I have read the quality control is really good. I went with the Wilton 14600 6.5" Reversible Swivel Mechanics Vise. I could not really find very many reviews on it and only one youtube video on it. So hopefully I did not waste my money. That said it was a tough choice I was considering getting the Wilton Rotating Jaw Vise as I do a lot of roll cage work and having a dedicated jaw for tubing was a big plus, however the shear size of the workpiece limit for the 14600 6.5" Reversible Swivel Mechanics Vise can hold up to 11-3/4 piece. Don't get me wrong there are very few times I have had the need to hold anything quite that big. But now I have the ability to do so if needed. It does have a tube jaw built in though it could be nicer. That said It should be here thursday!

So the other day I was down by the back water on our property, its a huge cove. I am considering setting up a small shooting range. I was planning on setting up targets over the water as its only about 3 feet deep and there is a huge bank on the other side almost straight up and down so there would never be anyone over there. But I think it may be easier to run it along the water as there is a huge hill on my side that curves around to the other side. I would have to use a canoe every time to repaint the targets. So it may be better this way. So when I was trying to see how much I would have to clear out to set up a range I found a trampoline that looks like it took out a screened in porch and speed limit sign and part of a power line during a storm. I wish I had taken a pic of it

But anyways I got some new garage art.

I don't know how deep the bury the sign post but that trampoline must have really been moving to rip through all that stuff.

I started sanding down the cab getting it ready for primer.

I got a little carried away with the por15. I did not realise it would be so runny so it looks like I will have a lot of sanding to do tomorrow.
