Cowl Vent Trash Guard
This is why I bought the cowl vent trash guard for my truck. This is only 5/6 hours of accumulation from today. Do you think GM engineered the style of the trucks so the leaves fall on the cowl ? Mega Elm trees near my home.

Re: Cowl Vent Trash Guard
I just installed a set in my cowl this evening. Nothing worse than pine needles and laurel oak leaves. I spent most of the summer welding in new metal to replace what had rotted out from "trash" falling through the cracks and rotting into compost. The previous owner had taken the time to glue in some window screen years ago, I wish i knew what kind of glue it was cause it worked real good!

Re: Cowl Vent Trash Guard
Most of the major parts vendors have them. I know Classic Parts and LMC Truck have them and so does Brothers Trucks.

Re: Cowl Vent Trash Guard
I got a pair of the black ones, not stainless, I was thinking of painting body color but the black just disappears. I cant remember if I ordered them from classic industries or truck & car shop.

Re: Cowl Vent Trash Guard
Seems like you can get that king of "guard" material at one of the big box hardware stores and make your own. My guess is probably cheaper than from one of the truck supply places.

Re: Cowl Vent Trash Guard
I haven't looked lately but never bought them because they seemed like too much money for what they are. Yeah, I know the cost is nothing compared to the rust repair. But that doesn't justify charging more. I've made them and it doesn't take long. They are a great idea whether you buy them or make them.
I am sure there was no intent to be allowing leaves and tree debris into the vents. Most leaves do just lay across the openings which blocks them off, like in your picture. A few flip just right and slide in though. Screening is an improvement that came on most vehicles later on.

Re: Cowl Vent Trash Guard
Good to know they aren't too expensive and you can save time and money going to the truck stores. Its often not the case.
I was thinking a little screen for my sliding rear window would be a good idea. Driving in the fall the leaves in the bed come flying in the window and startle the crap outta me haha.

Re: Cowl Vent Trash Guard
I made my own with leftover gutter leaf guard mesh. The screen isn't as small but they work like a champ.

Re: Cowl Vent Trash Guard
Or you could do like me and just leave your truck in the garage for years because it's taking years to get it back together and running again.
I definitely want to make or purchase some vent guards like these. |

Re: Cowl Vent Trash Guard
I just bought new shields for my truck, and just in time! Does anyone know what size screw/fastener is used for mounting? My truck had already been missing both the shields and fasteners.
Thank you! Jeff |

Re: Cowl Vent Trash Guard
they aren't a factory item - these are aftermarket additions (good ones) that didn't exist back in the day.

Re: Cowl Vent Trash Guard
I used rain gutter leaf guards from Home Depot. They were $5 and took less than 5 minutes to cut and install. I think they look better than the round hole ones you get from the parts places.

Re: Cowl Vent Trash Guard
I just used window screen and the black sealer stuff to stick it to the backside of the cowl. It works great and it's very cheap.

Andy, did you use the metal or fabric type of screen? Good idea and it looks good.

I had bought several rolls back when I redid the back porch so it was no cost at the time. I still have a half roll left. I used that black sticky stuff you buy at parts store they call it monkey something.

Re: Cowl Vent Trash Guard
Any issues with leaves getting trapped between the cowl vent and the new guard, requiring one to take everything apart to clean the trash out?

I got them too, after having to replace my inner and outer rockers and bottom of the A pillar, not dealing with it again!
