Stupid Engine mounts.,
I just dropped my 350/350 combo back into my 72 gmc. no matter what i try these stupid engine mounts will not line up on the towers. the tranny is perfectly mounted, and the engine is close, but the left side needs to come forward 1/2 inch, and the right needs to go back 1/2 inch. what is the easiest way to line this up? im almost to the point of unbolting the bellhousing almost all the way and moving the engine till it lines up, then retourquing everything. any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
thanx dale

losen up the towers. and unbolt the transmission. Once you got the thread running on the engine mounts, tighten it up. Align the transmission and get the bolts in it and then tighten up the rest. Hope it helps

Have seen this happen, make sure you have the engine SBC mounts on the correct sides---left/right as this can really screw things up.

I unbolted the towers completely from the frame, bolted them to the mounts on the engine, and use some bar stock as guide studs to force the towers back into place. Then I installed the remaining two bolts on each tower, and knocked the guide studs out, and then put the remaining bolts in.
That was after farting around for 2 hours trying to loosen everything on my truck to get the damn holes to line up...

woo hoo. sounds like i got a fun night planned. (sarcasm) These mounts can really be a pig to line up. How can u tell left from right? they both came in the same style box, with no marking, so i just figured they were the same. thanx

The mounts are the same part # for both sides.....I think Huck was refering to the frame stands. those mounts are a PITA to line up......the last 3 trucks I have done have had the center holr in the frame stand drilled to 5/8 ", to give a little room to work with. They bolt in much easier, & the extra material removed doesnt hurt a thing(that 7/16 bolt has a thick flatwasher on it). Good luck, crazyL

I JUST PUT A MOTOR IN MY 69 1 TON TOWTRUCK. WHAT A PAIN GETTING THE TOWERS TO BOLT UP TO THE MOUNTS. AFTER SCREWING WITH TRYING TO GET THE BOLTS STARTED FOR ABOUT 4 HOURS, I FINALLY REMOVED 1 OF THE MOTOR MOUNTS & FOUND THAT THE THEADED HOLE WAS ABOUT 1/4" HIGHER THAT THE OEM ONES. THEY WERE ANCHOR MOUNTS THAT WERE MADE IN INDIA. (WHAT DO A BUNCH OF INDIAN GUYS KNOW ABOUT 67-72 CHEVY TRUCK MOTOR MOUNTS ANYWAY??) I BET THERES NOT 3 67-72 TRUCKS IN ALL OF INDIA. I TOOK THOSE BACK, & WENT ON A QUEST OF ALL THE AUTO PARTS STORES IN TOWN TO TRY & FIND SOME MOUNTS THAT WERE CLOSER TO THE ORIGINAL ONES. ANYWAYS I SETTLED FOR SOME THAT WERE CLOSER TO MY OEM ONES , BUT STILL HAD TO GRIND ON THEM,LOOSEN UP MY TRANNY,LOOSEN MY FRAME TOWERS, DRAW THE MOTOR DOWN DEEPER IN THE FRAME WITH A BIG C CLAMP & PRY ON IT WITH A 3 FOOT PRY BAR. GOOD LUCK JOHN

I just put new mounts in my k20 last week and I had to lossen the trans mount and engine cross section . I also had to jack the tans to one side. That was after cutting a little piece out of the india motor mount to get the lower bolt in the block. It took me 3 hours to get everything lined up.
It will be worth the effort when you are done! Good luck! Zork. |
