60 longbed stepside camper
Hi, new to the forum and new to C10 ownership. I've just purchased a 60 C10 stepside that I am going to ship back here to New Zealand. Before I send it I was wondering if anyone out there would have a period correct camper shell to suit. I'd prefer one that sits at the same height or near the same as the roof. My plan with it is to turn it into a hauler for my sons race go Kart, we wont be sleeping in it. I restore cars for a job so dont mind turning a wrench or welding anything available to suit my needs. I'd consider anything, the truck is in LA at the moment, so I guess the closer the better. I've included a picture of the truck and a picture of a camper shell I have seen on here that I like the style of. Thanks for any help or tips.

Welcome to the forum
Finding one for a long stepside might prove to be difficult. Good luck.

Re: 60 longbed stepside camper
Very nice truck! I also have a longbed stepside and have been looking for a topper/canopy for about 2 years with zero success. I have considered narrowing one from a fleetside.

Re: 60 longbed stepside camper
Nice truck! Unfortunately, finding a period correct Short Step camper is like finding a Unicorn. Even here. Finding one for a Long Step is like finding the Unicorn while a Leprechaun is riding it!
I picked up a Long Fleet, all aluminum SportsLiner a few years back with the intention of narrowing it. Perfect height. Just too wide. A couple of months ago, there was a guy around here on CL Stockton who had what appeared to be a mix of long and short fleet SportsLiners in various conditions. He was asking 500 for all of them, would not separate. I had no choice but to decline. I was thinking of getting one for parts and some of the siding for replacement on mine. He's surely scrapped them by now. Here is the one that I got but haven't installed and another photo of the SoftTop brand that Ive adapted to it currently.

Although it doesn't look quite right, the wider shell may almost suit me better, the final idea I have with the shell is to make a it a 'unit' that basically has a bottom and sides inside the bed. I think you guys call them a slide in?I've even seen a couple of alaskan style campers that may do the trick. My sons kart will live inside the the camper and I'll jack it up and drive away during the week while I use the truck in my car restoration business, drive under for the weekends racing. The reason the wider camper will/may suit is that the kart is just an 1/8th of an inch narrower than the bed, so my thoughts were that the kart would sit above the height of the bed. The above plan is also why I dont want anything too 'nice', its going to be cut up. If you here of anything going let me know, I'll fill you in on progress as it develops. I breed cattle over here in New Zealand also, I may need to breed a unicorn too! I like the look of the canvas top, does it drop flat against the top of the bed? |
