700r4 trans out of a 82 buick
would a 700r4 out of a 82 buick work in a 86 truck? the guy i work with wants 200 for the trans and if i feel like it i can take the rear end also, but for 400 bucks i can buy the whole car. has a strong 350 will lay rubber for a while from what i hear. i can test drive it all that good stuff. what do ya'll think? worth 200 or the 400 for everything? would the trans even work? the setup is a gm 350/700r4...

is it a Chevy 350? if so then i MIGHT consider buying it for $400 if i were you. IMO, stay away from 82-83 TH700R4s. 1982 was the first year for them, and the earlier models are known for being exceptionally weak.

no dice, GM strengthened the trans by modifying the pump and a few other hard parts that wouldnt even be addressed in a "heavy duty" rebuild. your best bet is to find a unit 1988 or newer. if the engine in the car is not a SBC, the trans wont bolt to your engine anyways. plus, if its a non-Chevy engine, its not a 700R4, its a 2004R which may require an adapter plate to make work with your engine.

But wouldn't a 200r4 be a better tranny in a 82 versus the 700r4?

A 2004R in stock trim is no better than a 700R4, probaby much worse. From what I have read bout them, with the right build they are tough trannys. They don't have the big drop between 1st and 2nd like the 700's do. But, I like the very low first gear of 700R4's myself.
