250 6cyl 4x4 crossmember questions

Recently acquired a 68 4x4 frame set up for a 305 GMC. It has an offset engine crossmember. From what I am reading this engine crossmember will work for a 292 but perches are GMC only? I already have rebuilt my 250 and plan on using it. I'm wondering how rare these crossmembers are and if I've got a chance finding one for the 250?

Re: 250 6cyl 4x4 crossmember questions

I think a 250 uses the same one as a 327/350 - but don't quote me on that.

If you don't use the V6 member and perches, I would be interested in taking them off your hands...

Re: 250 6cyl 4x4 crossmember questions

Yes the 250 is the same as the V8 member , the V6 and 292 are the offset ones.

Thanks

Re: 250 6cyl 4x4 crossmember questions

The 292 requires the diagonal X-member in a 4x4. This is because the RH motor mount is forward of the fuel pump. [Possibly to counteract torque-flex from a very tall block ? [idk].

On the 250 L6, the motor mounts are symmetrical, so I guess it shares a V8 SBC X-member in common. Not too expert on V8s or smaller L6s.
I know nothing about the big GMC V6s, so I won't venture a comment about them.

Yes. The 292 K-type crossmembers are rare. 292 RH perches are rare, too. If the GMC V6 uses the same X-member, then the V6 perches are even rarer.

Attached a photo of my crossmember. When assembled the mounts line up directly across from each other.

OK. I see it. Wonder why the GMC V6 has asymmetrical mounts like the 292?

Look in junkyards for old UPS trucks, schoolbusses, 1 tons. They ran a lot of the Heavy Duty Tall Deck L6s.
You may need to get creative and fab your own diagonal X-member by bending some 2 - 3'' tubing and a welder.
There's someone selling [ebay?] symmetrical 292 mount kits, but they require using an electric fuel pump because they bolt onto the 292's mechanical fuel pump mount. Not satisfactory for me.
Find someone dumb enough to be ditching a 292 for the heavier, shorter-lasting SBC, and get his stuff off him.
You could also check the ''Swap Meet'' bulletin board at www.inliners.org
