I think it's called the diverter box. There's a flapper door that's probably no longer attached to the shaft. I think you can see the end of the shaft if you look up under the dash, to the right of the heater control panel. If the shaft is moving, but the air isn't changing to defrost, the flap isn't attached any more. Mine has the same problem.
You should be able to find a diverter box from one of the online suppliers here on the board. Changing it out might be a challenge, but it's worth it.

Definitely sounds like the diverter box....
Replaced mine last year and curred all my woes. Inside the box is a plastic diverter gate with a rubber gasket all along the outside edges of it........over time they get brittle and break where it attaches to the operating rod....... You can change it out in a day.......... try these links.....got mine at half the cost of locally........ http://www.gmpartsdirect.com http://www.partszoneonline.com Need more help........drop a message...

Only one day?? Is that an 8 hour day, or w/ OT? Actually, it probably isn't all that bad to change out. Usually, when I tear into something like that, I end up wrecking the glove box cardboard, pulling the wire out of the hoses, and slicing myself up on those little sharp pieces of metal that seem to jump out at you when your hands are up under the dash.
