What do I have here?
A few years back I sold my '69, and just recently picked up a '67 clipped '71.
Truck is a bit of a frankenstein, and I know just enough about them to be dangerous. This has a SBC400/TH350, front disks, wood bed, frame as been welded behind cab. Ive also noticed that the dash has an overspeed light and some sort of axle lock light. Looking for some help on what exactly I have here.

Re: What do I have here?
I wouldn’t call that a frankenstein. Shortened 71 with a 67 nose. They added a tach, shaved the mirrors, repainted in the original colors. Beautiful truck. The brown interior matches nicely. Not sure if that’s original but it could be. I see a spare tire holder in there. I would check under the bed side rails and underneath to see if the bed was shortened or if they used a factory short bed. It looks like the latter since the inside of the bed paint looks to be a different color?

Re: What do I have here?
If you have an axle lock & over speed lights it means the cluster assembly is out of a 1-1/2 or 2 ton truck.

Re: What do I have here?
Thanks for the kind words guys, and the help, I appreciate it. The guy i bought from didn't know how it reached its current state, i.e. when or why the 350 was changed to 400.
So essentially I have a '71 cab and long bed frame that was shortened, '67 clip and '67 short bed added. Appears other minor changes were removal of belt moulding, deleting the white middle stripe and obviously the wheels. Regardless, I was just looking for a good driver that I can do a few mods to.

Re: What do I have here?
overspeed and tandem lock lights may mean some instrumentation is out of a medium duty truck. nice truck.
EDIT: and the good news is that they didn't leave the side marker lights on the bed (if it was the 71 bed that was shortened or if they used bedsides from another 68-72. Last edited by jocko; 01-13-2018 at 04:41 PM. |

Re: What do I have here?
I wouldn't call it a Frankenstein either. Just a very nice modified truck.
I would put some mirrors on it. I like the shaved look, but the cops don't. I don't know the laws in IL. But my wife got a "Fix it' ticket for no front license plate. $227. Ouch.

Re: What do I have here?
You have a really nice truck there. As stated above, at least a chrome drivers side mirror, for your safety, and drive the wheels off it. I really don't think the bed has been shortened, maybe they had a good short one one laying around. Oh, yeah I think the stance is dead on as well. Does the air work good on it?

Re: What do I have here?
Franken or not, it was done with consistency! What you have is very nice and by outward appearances is a 1967 C10 due to the clip and the fact that the bed doesn't have side markers. That is, you've got 67-68 only grill and '67 only no-side-markers, which makes you're truck most likely a '67 to someone who's guessing at it.
Now if your cab had the '72 screw in the doors, the big window, the '67 small ignition bezel and your bed had the side markers and the 3rd stake hole, your truck would indeed be a FrankenTruck. -klb

Re: What do I have here?
Nice ride. Looks like motor is in the 6 cylinder position as well? To your point, it may be a Frankenstein of sorts but looks like a great truck.

Great looking truck. The saddle interior caught my attention.

Re: What do I have here?
Thanks for all of the positive comments and the answers, appreciate it!
The bed appears to be an original short bed. I believe I have original wiper arms, just need new blades on them. Not sure what the 6cyl position is.

Re: What do I have here?
The front of an inline 6 is about the same position as the small V8. That means the bellhousing on a 6 cylinder truck is closer to the rearend.
The engine and transmission are mounted more amid-ship on the inliner. Putting a V8 in the 6 cylinder position makes for better weight distribution IMO. You can look at pics of other trucks with HEI to see how far they are from the firewall to see how yours "measures up" After Googling images of HEI installs, yours looks like everyone elses! So probably my imagination.
