I am finishing the 350 crate engine for my 72. Can I install the exhaust manifolds to painted surface on the engine or should I remove the paint? Same question for oil filter with contact surface on engine painted.

I have always cleaned that area. My thoughts were the paint will only give you some uneven surfaces which can cause leaks and when you take off what you put on (I.E. the oil filter) it will take the paint off anyway.

YMMV though

Yes, metal to metal on mating surfaces, with gaskets where required.
