are 2wd sm465 trans junk?
Swapped the SM465 out of my 2WD 87 for a M20. Had it on craiglist a few times and only got 1 call but he was only interested in one for a 4WD. Is there a market for these things? Or should I just junk it? Its in the way in the garage and needs to go.

They certainly arent junk, but there are just so many of them out there. Plus they take a lot of abuse and last forever.

no, the 465 is a 4 speed, but with a granny geay- Low, 1, ,2 ,3
the M20- I assume OP is talking about a Muncie m20 car transmission. never offered in trucks factory, but gives you a true 4 speed, no granny gear before the square bodys, GM used the SM420, which is essentially the same as the 465 |

From what I read, M20 is the RP0, not the transmission name.
M20 is for a 117mm 6.55 1st gear 4 speed... sounds like a 465 to me. I have an SM465 in my 83GMC (non synchronized Low gear). I'll have to look at the RP0 label and see what it says. |

sm465 shifts slower then Rv's do the 1/4mile and only offers 3 usable speeds...nobody wants those for 2wd. I did the same as you, put a M20 in [a real muncie M20, not the RPO code] and gave my SM away.

Yes, I meant to say a Muncie M-20, not the RPO code.
Would be a shame to junk it. I have the complete setup from bell housing to driveshaft. Even has a new-in-the-box Luk slave cylinder I will throw in if somebody is interested. I am looking for a 10 or 12 bolt truck rear if somebody wants to trade. Its not a bad trans, its just bad for what I wanted it to do, lol. |

The off-road crowd loves them. They are strong and have a lower gear ratio. They can be converted to 4wd by changing the main shaft or by using an adapter kit. It would probably be cheaper for someone to just buy a 4wd one, but maybe someone will come along and be interested in yours, either for a 2wd or if they plan on converting it. I wouldn't junk it.

The 465 has a provision for a mount on the rear of the transmission. The SM420 does not it used two rear engine mounts on the bellhousing. I like to install Pontiac engines in the 60 thru 72 trucks. and the only bell housing mount stick shift Pontiac engines where in 55 thru 59 GMC trucks. so with the 465 trans I can three point mount a Pontiac engine in a GM truck using a Pontiac bellhousing or a steel scattershield. At present I have a 465 in a 86 two wheel drive 3/4 ton and another in a early square cab 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive.
