71 C10 shutting off

Hello forum!!!!

I currently have a sbc 350 carbureted engine that seems to die every time I put it in gear. I bypass this by adding a little acceleration to the truck from keeping from shutting off but once it gets going it goes. It seems when you put it on drive or reverse, the rpms drop very low causing it to shut off. When I start it it does struggle a bit to stay on for the first maybe 20 seconds but that maybe because it’s carburated IDK it’s my first carb engine in a long time.

Let me know your thought it is an automatic truck.

It sounds like your truck is an automatic, it should idle around 750 RPM in Park or Neutral and 600 RPM in gear. It could be as simple as adjusting your idle. Check your mixture screws and timing too. Good luck.

Depending on which carburetor you have the mixture screws are usually on the front, QJet, but may be on the side, Holley.

Post a pic of the engine so we can see what condition it is in, type of carb, how long this problem? Might be as simple as CRABMAN said! Does the engine run smooth in neutral and at speed. Some things to check-dirty air filter--fuel filter--vacuum leak--distributor cap--points?-wires-bad fuel--a photo of the engine might give us a clue to the problem!

I bought the truck two months ago with this problem. Was told it was a misfire due to a burnt msd spark plug wire. I replaced the wires and still giving me the problem.

Re: 71 C10 shutting off

Sounds like vacuum leak, and since it is when it is put in gear, I would check the connection at the transmission first. Make sure the rubber hose connection it tight and doesn't have a small leak. If that is good, check all the other connections and the carb mounting. Sometimes an engine can idle in neutral fine, even with a leak. But as soon as a load is put on the engine without an idle increase the leak causes a stall.

Not saying this is your problem but my old motor did the same thing, turned out to be a worn out cam.
