thinking of selling my truck - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

well my mind is doing circles around this for a little while and i can't figure out what to do. basically my truck is a money pit. its not that is breaks down, because it dosent, but there is always something i want to do to it. i know as long as i have it i am going to continue sinking money into it, i simply cannot stop. i'm not in debt but pretty much all the extra cash that i have left over from my paychecks always goes into it.

if i do sell it it won't be until this spring and i can't figure out what the best way to do it would be. should i leave it as it sits? should i go ahead and put the 12 bolt with posi in it and tires so it will be good at the track? would that help me get more money out of it. i have ALOT of money in the motor i just put in it so i wonder if i would get more if i pulled it and got a cheap 350 long block to put in it and sold the motor seperately. i just really can't decide what i should do. i know theres no way i will get out of it any where close to what i have in it, but i'm sure as hell not gonna give it away.

i'm not 100% set on selling it ubt being in college and we sold our house in dallas so i'm now garageless, although i can use my buddies if i need to. it just seems like mabey the best thing for me would be to get a clean new(er) car that i could make into just a nice drive around cruzier, stereo, mabey even something with a/c lol, now that would be a treat. and then return to my hotrodding when i get out of school and can afford to build what i really want and have more than one vehicle.

as you can tell by the lenght of my post i'm really confused on what i should do right now

I say park the truck, take insurance off it (minus fire and theft etc, only pennies a day) and wait till you are done school to finish it up... I'm sure you'll regret selling it when you can afford it and never forgive yourself...

parking the truck and getting another vehicle would be a good solution but the problem is i need the money from the truck to get another vehicle, becasue i'm going to want a nice looking car that is reliable, not a 1500 hunk a junk that i'm gonna be fixing all the time.

then get a $1500 car that isn't a hunk a junk. I got an '89 Buick LeSabre for $1200, had 144k, drove it 10k miles before an unfortunate accident (My fault, not the car's). during that time all i had to replace was the water pump ($30). got around 20-25 mpg, decent stereo with lots of room to improve, a/c, ps, pdl, pb, p seats, tilt. One of the things that bothered me about it was that it only had an 85 mph speedo, and a gas gauge. no other instrumentation

also pretty roomy, and i didn't consider it big enough to be a 'boat.'

Then it sounds like you should do like me..buy a 91-94 Saturn "2" series. (SC = 2 door, SL = 4 door) I paid $1500 for mine, and it's NICE! It's NEVER EVER left me stranded AT ALL, and it's got A/C and gets 35mpg.

Of course, I'm trying to decide whether or not to sell my truck & vette, and just keep the saturn and put the money in the bank to buy another vette some day...

Face the facts---You have an addiction! No matter what you own/drive, you will want to customize it. I've been through three vehicles in 9-months and it never fails. I thought my new truck was different but one month later, I have 7K+ invested in modifications.

I say keep the truck and be patient in "finishing" it. You've got an awesome canvas to continue building on and yet still be able to drive/enjoy it.

What you need to consider is how much you like the 73-87 body style. If you "really" like this body style, then you should do everything you can to keep what you have.

I don't care how much money you have spent, you won't get as much back. That's just part of the game, and you have to accept that fact going in.

The main reason you should keep it if it is really what you want is the growing value these trucks are seeing. Right now, there are some decent deals to be had. That won't last forever though. If you try to replace your truck a few years from now, chances are you will pay quit a bit more for the same quality truck.....

What would you get if you sold it? I was thinking the same thing, sell the truck and get a Camaro. I like my truck. My goal is to get this truck into the 12's. With a camaro, you are already in the 13's. With a truck the will beat a camaro gets more praise than any camaro ever would. Oh well, this is my opinion. I say keep the truck and you get you another daily driver. Get a second or third job to support your habit, LOL.

A truck like yours needs to be a toy, not a primary form of transportation. Get a cheap little car, another stock 73-87 with A/C, or maybe a beater S-10 with a stock SBC and A/C to drive daily. Treat it as your primary vehicle. Keep it running and reliable, but nothing more. Drive your truck on the weekends and enjoy it, but quit spending real money on it until after you graduate from school. Your school should be your most important thing right now. Spend crazy amounts of money on your truck later,when you actually have some and a nice garage to keep it in.

If you can afford to add a posi 12 bolt to your truck, you can afford a decent daily driver.

I've thought about selling my truck too, but I love having my truck alot more than I would love any newer car that I could have got for $2000. It may be a POS right now but I'll get it there. Your already there. Don't sell it now. Get a daily driver until you graduate.

On the truck I agree with everyone else that you need to keep the truck and drive it or get a daily driver. If anything drive the truck and just put enough into it when you can. Pick up things one at a time. Like get the posi when you can then later get a 12 bolt then the install kit and finally get it installed. Sure it will take time but you're keeping the truck and not breaking the bank. I know you're like me and want to get everything all at once to get the thing done but you need to realize that if you pace yourself you can still get it done and if something comes up where you need to fix something you can have a better chance of paying for it then unlike if you spent all the money at once and then broke.

I am going with the rest of the fellas, find another inexpensive vehicle and keep the truck...deals can be had, you just need to be lookin and in the right place at the right time. Not only that, but is this your first vehicle? If so, all the more reason to keep it...I miss my first car dearly!

Whatever you decide, take your time making the decision and don't rush it.

nope, not my first vehicle. i really agree with you guys in that getting another vehicle would be the best thing to do. but that really isn't an option for me right now. first off i don't have anywhere to store 2 vehicles. and if i get a new vehicle i want something nice. i'm not gonna sacrifice driving my truck everyday for a old grandma car or something, not that there is anything wrong with that, its just not something i could see myself doing.

thanks for the input everyone. right now i'm just going to think about it for awhile and try my hardest not to put anymoney into it (except that hood i'm buying this weekend - dammit, lol) and after the first of the year if i still want to get rid of it i think i'll just get a run till sold add in autotrader and sit on it until i can get what i want for it.

obviously when i look back i know i will regret it but i just need to do whats best for me now economically. there are plenty of these trucks around and if i do sell it i can always build another when i get out of school.

Keep the truck....you will regret if you sell it. I have contemplated selling mine countless times to get a nicer drive that gets good MPG and is a little more comortalbe. I could never get the money i have put into mine back out of it.....and i know i would regret it if i got rid of it. I just enjoy driving it so much.

You could always put the truck in a storage facility if they don't cost to much. Spend about 3k and get a small car in decent shape with a 4-banger 5-speed....then put in a pair of subwoofers and a nice system.....and drive your truck on weekends. Then when you have the cash...you can afford to fix up your truck.
