Never run anything but th350,s and th400,s before auto wise. Also what other parts will i need to do this conversion. I already have a rad with cooler in it.
My tk. Has 3.73 rear gears with 235r75-15 tires thanks bob

Re: 3 on tree to 700r4 conversion
87-92 700r4 transmissions from a truck seem to be the better ones if using a used pull out as is. If you get one that is rebuilt correctly then any year will work as the rebuild would correct the previous defienciencies. You will need a new cross member and driveshaft as well. There is also a throttle valve cable that needs to go from the transmission to the carb linkage that regulates the fluid pressure. There are several ways around the gear shift from floor shifters, automatic column swap, to modifying the manual column shift. These are some of the bigger items and there are a few other small items. Keep asking around here and doing internet searches on the subject. Even if you do not do all the work yourself it will make you better informed and a better customer.

Re: 3 on tree to 700r4 conversion
You might even consider a well built 200R4, if you can find one, if you are going to run it behind your six cylinder. Originally from the 80's as well they were not that robust but rebuilt right they can handle good V8 power. One reason I say that is they are lighter in weight and do not have as much parasitic horse power loss which maybe important to you with the six cylinder. The rear axle ratio and tires you have are perfectly fine.
FWIW I have a 200R4 I rebuilt myself behind my vortec headed 350 and would put one on a six cylinder all day long for the reasons above. |

Re: 3 on tree to 700r4 conversion
In stock form a 700 is stronger than a 200 but a 200 is easier to "build" strong than a 700. So I bought a "built" 200-4R and ran 12s with it in a 4500 pound car with a ZZ502 and a converter and drag radials. Never blinked!
The benefit of the 200-4R is that it is the same length as the TH350 and powerglide.

And there’s the speedo, starter and cooler lines. Have you looked into or thought of a hand type clutch pedal control? |

Re: 3 on tree to 700r4 conversion
The problem Most of these guys really for get to tell you.Like so many do.Is to have one rebuilt is one thing But this is where they really for get to tell you and trust me it hurts when after the trans rebuilt for 900.00 to 1200.00 is now it take 4-8 hours to to set up the Manuel valve body for shifting patterns.
Your dealing with old technology. The days of not having a computer is GONE. Your better off buying the 4L80E with the TCI wire harness a stand alone computer.Get a 2 peace drive shaft from a 1967--72 that had the th400.You have to move or get a trans mount cross member. For a inline 6 I seen th400 bolted to them.Check an see what gearing you have in your rear end It you have a 3.05- 3.25 the engine will have a hard time you need a 3.55 or better or the 250 or the 292 will bog down when you hit over drive Not enough HP cus not to much gear . That's like me running a 350 with a 4l80E with a gear vender with a 2.90 I wont have enough HP to even get off the line. You have to some some gear for the over drive trans. So do your home work Go visit a few transmission shops around you area and tell them what your doing. Ask them about the 200R4 /700R4 that are the cable ask them how hard are they to set up for my 250 inline 6 and the shifting patterns then ask them about the 4L80E with the TCI harness stand alone computer. Ask them for the bang of the buck witch one is lesser money.Witch one is the bullet proof trans and What dose each one cost to put in and and set up. These guys have done it but they leave out so much. If i wanted to put a rocket in my truck I go to a guy that has done it and he can point out the flaws in doing so |

Re: 3 on tree to 700r4 conversion
I currently in the process of pulling my 250 with the factory 350 tranny, will be installing a 292 along with the 200-4R. It has a factory 3:73 rear end. My neighbor is a retired trans. specialist from GM. He recommended the 200-4R. Same length as the 350, same drive shaft, just need to slide the rear trans mount back 4-5 inches.
