Oil dip stick sizes sbc
Anybody know if they changed the size of the sleeve.
I bought two now and both are to big for the hole on my 69 327 block.

Re: Oil dip stick sizes sbc
I freshened up a 70 350 last year for a friend. So it obviously had the driver side dipstick, just like they used for many years prior....
Could there be remains of an old lower dipstick in the block hole? (I'm assuming you have not had the engine apart and do not know if there's any of the old tube sticking out the bottom side of the block?) I'm not trying to sound like a Beavis, here, just help you... I do not know for sure if that hole size has ever changed. I bought a new lower dipstick tube from Summit. It was actually a GM part, from their line of GM performance parts. Don't remember what the upper tube and stick brand was. I'd think a 69 block would be the same as a 70. A 69 327 would be a large journal block, just like a 70 350. Hope I helped..... |

Re: Oil dip stick sizes sbc
The hole size and location changed. Earlier generation SBC will have a hole on driver side. Later, roller SBC will have hole on passenger side. One hole is bigger than the other. Can't remember which way it goes though. All I know is that they are not interchangeable.

Re: Oil dip stick sizes sbc
I took my oil pan off and tapped the broken piece out.
Bought a new dip stick and it is to big. I tried the freezer and hot block with no luck. Driver side dip stick. 283 or 327 not sure yet

Re: Oil dip stick sizes sbc
Well.........
It's possible that the lower most piece of the upper tube is broken off in that spot on the block, the part of the hole flush with the deck surface of the block??? The driver side dipstick hole is 2 sizes. THe first 3/4 inch is a little larger than the rest of the hole that goes all the way down into the block, coming out at the oil pan gasket surface. The neck down in that hole is a place for the lower dipstick tube to sit against, or a stop. The lower stick looks like it's flared at the top, The flare sits against that stop, nothing else needed for it's installation. THe lower tube IS needed to keep the stick straight to accurately check the oil, and so it doesn't hit the crank... The bottom of the upper tube drivers into the hole at the head gasket deck surface. On engines that I've toen down, I've seen a bunch of different screwed up dipstick deals. Not surprised with whatever is going on with yours. Might post a pic if still are having issues...... |
