WTH: Parts ID Help
That's Want To Have, in case you were wondering. I have a few things, maybe quite a few, I'm not sure exactly what they are. It seems I only retail the more current info I need to know and let older things drop off. I have had this stuff forever. I have two 3spd/transfer case combos w/fr driveshaft, transfer case shifters, a couple small blocks, a slew of driveshafts, and I'm sure more. It has come to the time I am sincerely going to get rid of basically everything I won't be needing for what I have now. None of this, "But I'd still like to build a xxx or use it one a xxx one day". I have trees to take down, a building that houses a lot of this stuff that needs about a rebuild, and a building to construct before I get rid of this place and the sooner the better.
So I thought this could be a fun thread as well as helping me gather info. A sort of mind exercise thing for use intellectual types ![]() This is a Rockwell transfer case. I haven't gotten anything off the tag yet. I thought if anyone recognized the transmission or other things it would answer what it came out of. This I know is a 3spd/Dana20 with dbl cardon joint, so Blazer is what I'd think What about this t-case shifter?

Re: WTH: Parts ID Help
Other shifters. I can get pictures of bottom ends later. These three are the same, the different one not shown by itself. More concerned about which transfer case than the exact vehicle.

Re: WTH: Parts ID Help
The shifter in your first post is from a square body NP205.
The three that are the same look like Rockwell T221 to me. Last edited by ajviper; 06-28-2018 at 07:31 PM. |

Re: WTH: Parts ID Help
Thanks. I figured the three would either be for Rockwell or Dana20. Makes sense they'd be Rockwell. The linkage/mounts on the most complete one is similar to what's on that complete unit in first picture.
I've never had (or recall seeing) a truck with that type shifter knob, with no pattern, on the NP205 shifter. Certainly the same as others at the bottom of shifter. Looks like it's from the era full-time was offered. Does anyone recognize that first combination? Could it be '60s Chevy K/10? I don't know what transmission that is. I wonder if it's even GM, maybe Jeep or IH? The codes on the two engines I have are WA (blue) and TJZ. TJZ is simple, only shows one possibility... '73 20-30 series 350 4bbl. Funny thing on that one is it has the early heads with no alt mount bosses. The WA could be '65 10-30 283 2bbl, '68 307 2bbl 10-20, or '69 350 4bbl 20-30. It has an early square bore intake, late heads with alt bosses, and valve covers for late crankcase venting. It's like someone swapped heads on these motors, but they came from parted trucks from different places. The WA still has flex-plate and torque convertor in place. I need to see if large or small bore. If it's a '69 350 it's a 4-bolt and so should be the TJZ.

The top pic is from a 67-68 K something with what appears have been a six Cylinder based on the bell housing. The 67-68 Rockwell T221 T-Cases had the shifter on the left side as that is. 66 and prior 221's were divorced. The later model t-case shifter shown further down is from circa 1979 Chevy Silverado with auto (full time) hubs. My uncle had one just like it. The casting numbers on the engine blocks will tell the tale. If the older one ends in 0010 it will be a 350 4-bolt main 1970. Casting number on left top side of bell housing mount at the end of the left head.

Even motors that came in trucks , that should be 4 bolt, had 2 bolts. It seems that later on GM put in what ever they had on hand? I pulled a 0010 motor out of a 1969 Chevy c30 openroad motor home and it had a 4 bolt and a steel crank. I pulled a 0010 motor out of a 1973 c-10 and it was a 2 bolt.

Re: WTH: Parts ID Help
Those motors need to be tore down and checked / measured / cast numbers ID-ed etc to see if they are even any good parts there worth even using
With all the after market parts and castings available now days

Re: WTH: Parts ID Help
I got busy and need to get back to this. So, what transmission would that be in that 67/68 Rockwell combo? The motors are builders in my mind. I didn't pull them from the trucks they were running in, but someone else I know did a long time ago. They've always been inside. I just got it all out to take pictures. People buy them all the time, especially carb to pan like these. Some want the correct engine back in their trucks

Re: WTH: Parts ID Help
Which transfer case shifter comes to the center of the hump, like this one on bottom right? assume it was a 3spd transmission with Dana20 or Rockwell set-up

Re: WTH: Parts ID Help
Does the transmission hooked up to the rockwell have four bolts on the side cover?

Re: WTH: Parts ID Help
Sounds like an SM318. The info packages list the SM318 as the standard transmission on a 4x4 up to '68.

Re: WTH: Parts ID Help
Thanks Randy. I've seen both 2 and 4 with that casting, too. But I guess combined with the suffix code it will tell the application. I should just sit on these for my future builders maybe. Kinda hoping the one is a 283. I'll check that casting#, but may just take these down farther to look inside before doing anything else. Right now I'd let one go real cheap untouched.

Re: WTH: Parts ID Help
I finally got the casting #s off the blocks. The WA (blue) one is a 3970010, so that makes it a '69 350 @255hp. The TJZ has casting #3944636 and I can't find that on any list. Funny the chart shows the '73 TJZ @155hp. Both engines will be taken down and stored or sold if found to be buildable.
I noticed at the center top (slightly left looking from behind) of the back of the TJZ block is a boss. It's flat on top, round, and about 1.25-1.50" dia. Like what is there for the distributor but smaller and off the area forward of the bellhousing where the casting numbers are. I don't understand why that casting number doesn't show up anywhere.

Re: WTH: Parts ID Help
I don't know, but it isn't drilled. I remember them always being in the VC. I never paid any attention to this area until I was looking at both together. I just wonder what that block was even out of, with a casting number that goes nowhere. Could it be a replacement block? Maybe that boss is a later thing? I'll have to look at a couple other motors I have here. I'm hoping that other block is a 4-bolt steel crank. I think it will be. They don't list it under the casting numbers, but my '68 327 is a 397010 4-bolt steel crank. I guess if I build a 383 with it the crank will be out for another motor.
If this 010 motor turns out to be 4-bolt/steel crank, and looks good inside, should this be the one to sell as a good desired builder? I have a '71 truck 350 on the stand I was already going to use to build a 383 with.

Re: WTH: Parts ID Help
Good idea. We do have that technology!!
![]() You know, that roundish thing that's part of the block, kinda like a cylindrical tower rising above the area behind but offset a bit from the distributor in front of the bellhousing mounting surface and behind the back intake valley. Ok, never mind. I'll run out and snap a quick shot. '73 block: '70 block:

Re: WTH: Parts ID Help
And I misread that casting#. I blew this picture up and can see it is 3914636, which is a '68 307 200hp 2bbl car & truck engine casting. But the suffix decoder says '73 350 conv cab 155hp 4bbl C10-20
