New to hei. What's this about "goo on bottom of hei modual ?" And would that also go for the petronix modual that replaces points ? I don't remember anything about this in installation instructions. Wonder if the "goo" is present on new distributors ?

HEI uses thermal compound like computer CPUs do to transfer heat. Your module won't last long without it.

It's a conductive grease. The really good stuff uses silver particles, and the price shows it. That's for some really high heat transfer. An HEI module doesn't run as hot as an overclocked CPU, so doesn't need that good a conductivity.

So the petronix modual in my goat probably needs the goo. A modual is a modual right ? They are basically doing the same function.

Pertronix units do not use the heat transfer compound.

The modules the various Pertronix systems use inside the distributor are simply an electronic trigger. The module in the HEI does more than just act as a trigger, thus it gets hot while the Pertonix modules don't really get hot on their own.

For my HEI distributors I buy thermal compound (also called thermal paste) at Best Buy or a computer store. It's a little more expensive, but a tube lasts a long time.

It's die-electric grease.
It helps dissipate the heat generated by the module and conducts electricity(ground)New modules usually come with a note saying to use it.
Same stuff used to mount the cooling fins in your computer and for the same reason.
The better auto parts stores have it-Just ask for die-electric grease.
You do need to use it!

Dielectric grease and thermal compound is not the same thing. Dielectric grease is used to prevent corrosion. It is an insulator. It will actually cause the module to run hotter.

Thermal compound will transfer heat. It won't insulate it.
