Re: 292 cam swap

At least you can salvage the head, oil pan, valve, timing and lifter covers. And the 292- specific motor mounts.

Re: 292 cam swap

I didn't know you could remove the cam in pieces. Good to know for future reference. BTW, where did you find a block with the window in the side? Mine doesn't have one, but it seems like it could be useful if I did.

Re: 292 cam swap

Its not a hole... its an inspection port.

I just got this, a 66 K30. it ran beautifully for 2 weeks then... one day coming down a hill in low range in first gear I put the clutch in because it would roll faster than when in gear so to speak. at the bottom of the hill I let the clutch out. and ....it let the cam out.

the head was a 194 head, the piston bent both valves and destroyed the head, the oil pan has a viewing port in it as well.

absolute stoopidy on my part

I am a bit of a fan when it comes to six's, this one will be sorely missed.

Re: 292 cam swap

>>coming down a hill in low range in first gear I put the clutch in because it would roll faster than when in gear so to speak.<<

Neutral should never, ever be used when rolling down hill with manual or automatic transmissions. Few transmissions have rear pumps and with the engine idling, a front pump won't supply a enough oil to lubricate the trans if done on a regular basis.

It is actually illegal in many states to coast down hill with the engine not in gear. Clutch disengaged would be included in that. I'm surprised you didn't launch the cluster gear in a similar fashion.

"California Vehicle Code 21710 states, “The driver of a motor vehicle when traveling on down grade upon any highway shall not coast with the gears of such a vehicle in neutral.” It would seem the main reason for this law is that coasting in neutral is unsafe."

Re: 292 cam swap

My condolences. That mill must've been abused before you got it.
