question on tire size for the panel - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

It has been a long time since I have been down in the 15" tire ranges so thought I would pose the question... What would be the ideal sizing for the largest rear tire I can put on the 68' panel truck using my 8" wide aluminum slot rims? Only rear mod is it will be lowered with 2" blocks to help equal out the front dropped spindles. I have 7" wide rims for the front and would like them to be smaller than the rears.

What look are you striving for? Street truck? Then 275/60/15' are tall and wide a 295/50/15 is wider but shorter. Although with just a 2" drop some 285/70's would fill the wheel well nicely. There are some larger light truck tires out there if want the big tire off road or commercial look.

I run 255/70/15's on a 15x8 rally. Rear suspension is bags. They measure a lil under 29.5". No rubbing ever. I want to try a 31/10.5 with a highway tread to fill the wheel well better.

Back when I was 17 I had my 1st 69 LWB truck. I started out with a set of 32/11.50 on the rear of it that I found out later would rub the innerwheel tubs when going around a corner. My buddies uncle raced dirt track and he gave me a pair of McCreary 33/ 14.50 dirt track tires that I stuffed on the 8" rims. Looked great on the truck but with the too narrow rims only center of tire was hitting the road but man would it hook lol. Had to put air in them every other day and with the soft compound they only lasted a couple weeks on the road but I had an endless supply. What we did as kids would probably get us killed nowadays. Man I miss that truck

I Just want to fill the fenders up a bit more. I will definitely have to wait until I get it back on the ground to see were it sits 1st because I am unsure if there was any drop in the front springs. They look stock to me but I want to be sure. The tires it has on it (which need to be replaced anyway due to age and cracking) just looked like a lost ball in the tall grass. I don't want to drop the truck as much as just get the air out of the openings, if you know what I mean.

What it has now is 235/70 in the rear and 215/ 70 on the fronts with the vette rallys. and this is what it looked like when I 1st brought it home.

It will sit at least 2" lower front and rear now due to spindle change and added block in rear.

There are a lot of pages to sift thru on the link you provided so I hope to find something that has the stance I am looking for. I am not ready for tires yet but there are a lot of deals locally on craigslist for tires from time to time and would hate to miss out on a decent set.

THIS is what I "Really" wanted to do to this panel. I have the rear and tires (33x21.5 MT on 15x15 rims) pictured as well as a narrowed frame section with ladders & coil overs I bought from Summit years ago. The guy that was going to set it up for me got hurt and no longer does it so it has all just sit here in storage since. I have yet to find anyone else local that is willing to help and that is way too far from my comfort zone to be messing with that.

I have 265-75-15 on the rear with 8" rims and 235-75 15 on the front with 7" rims. Plenty of clearance. Second picture is the tires I am going to put on the rear as soon as I figure out exactly what I need for rims. I am thinking 11 or 12" wide with a 7 or 7.5" back space. The tires are 14" wide.

What size are the bottom tires? At 14" wide sounds like you will need to widen the tubs some. From the face of my brake drum to the inner lip of the quarter panel is 8.5". From the face of the drum to the inner side of wheel tub is 5". From the face of the drum to the coil spring is 9.5". Looks like 7" of backspace would be just about right to keep them close but not right on the quarter. Looks like about 3" of tub widening would give you 1" gap between tire and tub

Tires are S375 60D-15. Tubs are already widened.

A Follow-on related question on tire size. What is the tallest tire that can be used on a 1970 4x4 C10 Suburban. No Lift, 15inch wheels.

I have 33x11.50 on my Blazer with no lift and it does not hit at all I would suspect the Suburban would have the same limit
