Detroit Lockers???
Just looking for some feedback here.
I read an interesting article in one of my 4x4 magazines last night. I drive a 2wd, so often the articles don't apply, but in this article they were talking about upgrading a Jeep rear-end to a Dana 35 (I think) Detroit Locker with beefier axles for off-roading. Now, I don't really go off road with my 2wd (I know Prerunner1982 does), but I've often thought of upgrading from my limited slip 12 bolt to a locker set-up - for increased winter traction, etc. Has anyone out there done this? Is it expensive? I don't imagine it'll be a project right away, but I wouldn't mind getting some ideas to start chewing on. Thanks for the input. |

I don't know first-hand, but I've heard that the lockers aren't good for snow/ice driving. That being said, I have detorits in 4 of my rigs!!! Guess what I never drive in? RIGHT! SNOW and ICE!!

A "locker" isn't recommended for snow and ice. You would have to be carefull with it.

its the best thing in snow and ice
after you crash that is. its kind of like a limited slip but stronger and instead of the 1 wheel peel after your stuck both will spin. i dont know if they make them for 2wd but the one for my truck was 325 and not to hard to install

You definetely don't want a Detroit locker if you are planning on driving on ice/snow, from what I've read others say about them. I've heard them say they feel like you are driving on ice when on a dry road.

Great thanks - just the kinda feedback I was looking for. Guess I can file that idea under
Oh well, if I look at it positively, it's one more thing off my "To Do" list. Excellent, just 658,294... to go. Thanks again. |

Ice/snow and locker=sideways
sideways=donuts=fun My one wheel peel is all over the road in the winter, a locker would be worse but more fun! If you wanna stay in control throw it it 4WD.

Sound to me like the word on Lockers is that they aren't good for street use, period? That sucks.. I was thinking of installing one for more fun and burnouts, but I liked how one said it operates like an open diff on turns... Whats the deal?

Correct me if I'm wrong -- are Detroit Lockers activated by a different in axle speeds?

As you can likely tell by the amount of correction I've received in this post, I know very little about these things. I just thought I'd bump it to see if you can get an answer. |

Detroits are not bad on the road. I have one in my dually and can't even tell it's back there. The old one in my '60 Suburban (they were called "No-Spins" back then) clanks and bangs around, but the newer versions are quite tame. Don't be scared, get you a locker as long as you ARE NOT EVER going to drive on ice.
