Classic Car Insurance for a Daily Driver?

Anyone have insurance that covers their classic to drive daily anywhere?

I want to drive my '70 stepside regularly but all the classic car insurance guys like Hagerty I've found don't allow errands or driving to work while the truck has collision/damage/theft coverage.

My research didn't come up with any classic insurance companies that would. Most of the majors will try to discourage you from getting full coverage. They want nothing to do with us and our old vehicles.

I have mine under USAA, pretty cheap for good coverage. Fantastic customer service too. Only thing is for USAA you have to be or have been in the service/have close family who serve/served.

I've been at the receiving a screwing end of USAA when one of their policy holders was blatantly in the wrong,and all I'll say is they are a far cry from any level of honor to be associated with the military. And those who have used them have told me they have a one strike and you're 86'd policy.

I don't believe there is any classic insurance company that will allow you to do what your state's classic registration won't allow, use as a daily driver. There needs to be an in between tier for that. I realize there are those driving old bombers that just made the age requirement who are skirting around inspections and there is no special interest element in their possessed vehicle. But what about the guy who prefers to drive, on occasion, their pride and joy highly maintained vehicle to do whatever they damn well please? This tier would require the same safety inspection as with late-model regularly registered vehicles. Why should we pay full price for a registration and insurance on a vehicle that sits all winter (not to mention no winter accident risk), gets gone through before hitting the road in spring (unlike all the late-models driven through winter), and is carefully driven where ever it goes. And the repairs end of a normal policy puts your unrestored classic as an old vehicle not worthy of a few thousand dollars to repair? Here in MD they only require safety inspection at change of ownership. I drove the '92 GMC I factory ordered for 22 years and went 330k miles without any inspection. In that time I had rusted out brake lines, fuel lines, break issues, worn steering... many issues that would not pass an inspection that many people ignore till a wheel falls off. I just don't see what these laws are protecting. I understand no commercial use, but chores, visiting, traveling? Isn't this a free country? Who am I hurting? I've always driven vehicles of classic age and it wasn't to go sit at a show or be in a parade. They are what I chose to drive and enjoy DRIVING. Better cared for than newer vehicles yet with regular insurance good luck getting full coverage. There most definitely needs to be something in between and SEMA needs to get on the ball on that.

Every state has different laws and regulations in regards to auto ins hagerty offered 0 deductible for a few years which I thought was strange since New York ins law states the the minimum deductible is 100 for collision.the reason I know this is I am a retired Allstate agent.
I have hagerty and when I add a new vehicle they have a few check boxes. Like going out for a drive for ice cream or to shows. But they do have one for the occasional driving to work. I'm retired so that one never gets picked. But i have several under pleasure use . I even have 10k annual mileage listed on my chevelle . Never gave me a problem.


But I do have 3 cars on my regular auto insurance. But like I said every state is different.


Tim wish ny would do something like that for inspections on historical cars. It's a pain keeping track of the old cars and inspection dates. I have one I had to let expire , who the hell takes a 63 Avanti out in February to get it inspected.

American Family is who I use. I have also used State Farm for my old cars in the past. No complaints against either company. Both would cover my cars for an appraised amount. I think it is all considered regular car insurance just with an upfront agreed upon amount. I get full coverage, middle of the road liability and that's it. No mileage requirements. It does not get cheaper in the winter while it sits, I just pay all year long and can enjoy it on a warm December day when I choose. I asked about just dropping the insurance in the winter to just collision and it was only a couple dollars less a month so I just keep in fully insured. I think I pay about $500 a year for a car appraised at $60K and I put about 5000 mile on it a year with a $500 deductible.

American Family has proper insurance for classics.

There are special insurance classes for cars with historical plates here in Missouri. Historical plates restrict the car to 1000 miles (I believe) which makes the insurance a lot less, but I put a few thousand on my classics per year and just suck it up.

Sick, it sounds like you are using a "Stated Value" policy and not an "agreed value" policy like most collector insurance. There can be pitfalls with Stated Value

I was not able to find an agreed valve option available for using the truck as a daily driver as the OP asked. I had several companies state they would do an agreed valve but would not provide liability insurance for the truck. So I would have had to try to get liability through a second vendor. There is now way that would work if there was ever an accident.
I also just found out State Farms new policies will not cover 71 and older.
