Lets talk steering wheel ideas!

Hi all,

As many of you know i'm in the process of finishing up the frame off restoration of my 72 GMC Jimmy. The truck was mostly stock but had an aftermarket steering wheel on it. That steering wheel isn't right for this truck (see picture).

I'm looking for inspiration. What steering wheel do you think i should put on the truck? My truck is mostly stock, its been repainted in the original color. there is no lift. I put in leather instead of vinyl seats and i'm reupholstering the doors in brown leather, but it is made to mimic the stock look. I'm using orange seatbelts rather than white to give it a little bit of custom look.

I have heard many talking up the chevelle 15" steering wheel with a softgrip on it. I'm considering that. What other ideas do you think i should consider? Pictures are worth a thousand words!!!

Thanks all!

Re: Lets talk steering wheel ideas!

Is the Chevelle wheel a 3-spoke? I do like the look of those.

Yes, its a 3 spoke. polished aluminum.

I also like the rosewood 15" steering wheels that you see in many of the 67-72 truck catalogs.

You're going to have a very nice rig once you're done.

Re: Lets talk steering wheel ideas!

As mentioned above, the 69-72 GM “Comfort Grip” steering wheel. Buy a 67-68 Camaro installation kit which fits the smaller diameter columns before they had the ignition in the column. I have them in my Camaro, my ‘69 short step, and even in my CJ-5!

That or an ‘88-‘94 truck with either “Chevrolet” or “GMC” on the horn button depending on the flavor of your truck. If you like a larger diameter wheel, this is the way to go.

A1971blazer, that steering wheel looks really nice. I only wish I could get a GMC horn cap or even a blank cap instead of the bowtie. Any ideas?

I worked for Hertz when the Chevette came out. I've driven too many of them; I'm afraid that steering wheel would give me horrible flashbacks.

that is an awesome find on ebay! I'm going to order that steering wheel, it looks just like what you got on your truck + the GMC logo on the horn cap. Thank you so much for the link!!

Re: Lets talk steering wheel ideas!

I think these came on Safaris or GMC Canyons 1992 or earlier and are 15" diameter.

Re: Lets talk steering wheel ideas!

I know this is all old thread, but this is what I ended up with. Very happy with the results.

The console is the LMC console, covered in ultra leather. RV trim rings for the cup holders and the original gmc logo moved over from the original console. The original console could not be rescued.

The door cards are the original, covered in ultra leather with contrast color insert made from the same material as the dashpad.

Where did you get the RV trim rings?
