Longhorn got a fresh tailgate
The Longhorn's tailgate was getting tired. Somebody had dropped something on it in the past and it didn't close all the way on one side and was hard to unlatch. I bought this tailgate from a board member a while back. Since the tailgate had woodgrain applique holes already in it and I had used trim laying around, I decided to add the woodgrain. The only thing new is the woodgrain and the GMC letters. I used laquer paint that had been on the shelf for at least 30 years.

Re: Longhorn got a fresh tailgate
It just now occurred to me, do you think these Longhorns were actually made to haul carpet rolls?

Re: Longhorn got a fresh tailgate
I used to really test these tailgates. Can you imagine how much pressure 12' sheetrock puts on one? Of course 16' lumber puts some load on a tailgate too.

Re: Longhorn got a fresh tailgate
I've never driven it to Ottawa, but I drove it to El Dorado and KC. I might drive it Ottawa next year. I have a room reserved for the show.

Re: Longhorn got a fresh tailgate
kingsolver72 I was looking at the flamed SWB picture. I have used that method of supporting the load off the tailgate before. It looks like you had a 2X under it to boot.

I don’t remember if I used 2xs but I know I have use 2x8 plywood to help support the tailgate and keep the carpet from bending if it didn’t have a tube in it. The trucks were a back up for when my cargo vans broke down. Still had to work regardless. I’d loved to own a longhorn and a k10/k/20 I think in that pic that’s the end of the roll. |

Re: Longhorn got a fresh tailgate
We hauled an excavator final drive motor up to Springfield this morning and administered the first scratch.

Re: Longhorn got a fresh tailgate
Nice improvement!
I hauled many loads of vinyl siding stacked high on those poor tailgates. Never hurt one. That is some heavy floppy cargo, like sheetrock. I made a platform with a sheet of plywood on 2x4s laid flat with a 2x4 across the tailend on edge. I'd slide that back to just past the lowered tailgate. I cut tapers on both ends and painted it yellow with black chevron stripes. Then I started using the little trailer to haul jobs. That C/30 I had with 11' utility body was the perfect set-up. I remember back in the late-70s when trucks were taking over from vans the guy who owned this country liquor store had a new modified C20 or C30 sitting out front. It was that green they used that was a shade darker than Medium Olive (75-78 or so) with chrome wagon wheels. Looked really sharp. What was so custom about it was the bed was stretched to 12' (or close) and it was tandem. It was a carpet man's dream (or drywall or siding). Looked factory except for the six chrome wagon wheels. I never got a picture or stopped to get the story. It was in an area I did work in from time to time. I think it was done just to be custom. Right about the time duallies were coming on. I saw no need for it as far as the liquor store went.

Re: Longhorn got a fresh tailgate
In those days my dreams were not of siding or sheetrock or carpet.

Re: Longhorn got a fresh tailgate
Well, there was a small patch of carpet involved...maybe.

Re: Longhorn got a fresh tailgate
I had no need for dreams back then. Reality was close enough for me! I did have fears when it came to carpet, though. You get warned about carpet burns but no one explains just how it happens. Or maybe I just forgot to think about that at the moment.

Re: Longhorn got a fresh tailgate
Just remember, when it comes to carpet.... fuzzy side up.
I'm not sure I have the right picture here Last edited by special-K; 12-06-2018 at 12:58 PM. |
