Drop spindles that ADD track width?

Hey guys, I in the market for a set of 2-2.5" drop spindles for my 68 C10 with drum brakes all around. The set of wheels I am interested in as well only comes in a +12mm offset. If I could get a set of drop spindles that pushed the front wheels out 3/4 to 1" I should be able to make them work.

I've heard the CPP modular spindles don't add any track width, but what is that in relation to? A stock disc brake or drum spindle truck?

If anyone has info on some of the different spindles and how much they push, or suck in the wheels it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Drop spindles that ADD track width?

Almost every drop spindles that converts drum to disc will, push out the track width 3/4 in on each side. I am researching this now and all the info I come across states they go out if converting to disc

Is that still true with the CPP modular drop spindle?

Re: Drop spindles that ADD track width?

This is a long drawn out discussion about drop spindles that I’ve never seen proof of.
I’m talking actual numbers.
Even when there was a CPP rep here as a member, there were too many different answers for the same question.
The new drop spindle moves track width out or in compared to:
1) drum brakes
2) stock disc brake spindles
3) drop disc brake spindles
4) CPP modular spindles

There should be a given number for each of the the above, starting with drum brake track width.

When I was searching this forum for this information I came across many old threads where you have asked this question. Its frustrating after all this time it still hasnt been answered.

Im going to phone them this week and see if they can clarify this.

I bet you could phone them ever month for a year and get 12 different answers.
There are numbers in print that don't agree what CPP customer service techs say.
Unless you compare all the spindles, (assembled with a drum brake or disc rotor) side by side,... you will never know the true answer.
And a shorter coil spring will affect track width, because it changes the arc of the lower a-arm.
(when the spring is shorter the track width gets wider by a small amount)

I ended up getting some time to call CPP this afternoon. I had a lengthy chat with one of their techs who seemed very knowledgeable.

I asked the question about the drop spindles and how much it pushes the wheel mounting surface (WMS) in/out. His reply was, "if your converting from stock drum brakes, the modular spindle will push the WMS out 0.250"/ side and the standard drop spindle will push the WMS out 0.5625"/side.

Im not sure what the track width difference is between a drum/disc truck, but Im sure if someone searched on here you could find that info and do the math to see what the differance would be going from stock disc spindle to mod/std drop sindle.

Was hoping for a bit more then that so i'll give McGaughys a call and see where they sit.

Re: Drop spindles that ADD track width?

Good luck with your search.
There are several old threads that say one thing and then there are CPP published charts that say other.
I no longer care to fight the battle.
If you want your track width increased by 1” per side I suggest spacers.
I always do my suspension work first,... then order wheels that fit the way I want them to look on the truck.
Not everyone can do this.
I understand that.
Just the way I go about it.

I 100% agree. This is typically how I like to do it as well. Unfortunetly I haven't been able to find the "perfect" wheel that fits my budget. The closet wheel that does is what i'm trying to see if I can make work.

My plan is to get all of the suspension work done that I want, then check and see how close I am.

Re: Drop spindles that ADD track width?

Stock track width is 62.5 on front drum brake trucks, the standard disc brake conversion spindles add approx. .75-per side ( 3/4" per side ) = 1 1/2" total so approx. 64", per above discussion the springs used can affect track width slightly as can alignment shims, tweaked frames, etc..... So basically using a standard not modular disc conversion spindle you add approx. 1 1/2" to track width. Because of variables with each truck this variance can be slightly different from 1 truck to another. All we've seen have been within 63 3/4 to just slightly over 64"
Paul Sr @ GMCPauls

Thought I better come back in and edit to add the above track width is hub to hub not inner tire to tire or outer tire to tire measurement's. The rim off set and width combined with the tire widths will affect those track widths.
