update on electrolysis
Some of you may remember that I was going to try to save my co-workers behind for the second year in a row. He shoots his Blackpowder and never cleans it. The breach plug becomes one with the barrel.
I used Arm and Hammer Washing Soda like the instructions stated. Filled a 5 gallon bucket half full. and cut a piece of stainless screen about 10 inches wide and 20 inches long. I rolled the screen to form a tube and placed it in the solution adding the positive cable. As the process works line of site, this gave me 360 degrees. I used a board with a hole to keep the barrel upright and clipped on the negative clamp. Fired up the battery charger and watched it boil. Left it on for about 8 hours and took the barrel to work the next morning. Chucked it in the lathe, used an easy-out and the plug came out. Pretty slick. Chased the threads and gave it back to him for the last time. Next time I keep the gun. I am going to set the solution aside and try it later on some truck parts. Just need to find some 30 year old rusty parts. Anyone know where to find some?

Stocker, tried the Mother-in Law. Kept blowing breakers. Big woman with lots of hair.
Leinie, positive to the scrap piece and negative to the good(piece to be cleaned/saved). Used 1/2 cup to 2 1/2 gallons water. As I said, I used a piece of grate like metal bent like a tube. Expanded metal would work for steel parts. I was cleaning a stainless rifle barrel so I used stainless. The article explains things very well. Shoot, I followed the directions and I'm no rocket scientist.

Thanks for the link and other info. I got me some A&H stuff and a piece of stainless rod and am currently cooking a frozen rear hatch hinge for a 72 Blazer.

actually you use the stainless so it doesn't erode as fast. cold steel will erode and become useless after a short period. I use an old stainless sheet pan for mine. works great and lasts forever. With steel, you have to stop every once in a while and clean the build up off, and eventually (in a couple days) it will be so eroded that you can't use it anymore. I've put cylinder heads in before and it works very well to clean the old crust and grime out of them too. Just spray them off with WD-40 when you're done and they are good to go. Won't harm o-rings or seals either. Which is nice when you don't want to take things apart.

My hinge has been in there for about 10 hours. I only have a small charger. The hinge was totally seized up . I can now move it with my bare hands. Not full range of motion but it moves!

I left it in over night so it was in about 18 hours. The hinge is real free moving now and the paint and rust came off easily with a wire brush.

BIG TANK...Very large charger, maybe 200 Amp.... I'd say maybe 3-4 days. Would be cool to see, hehe. Might be a nit of an explosion hazard. That's a lot of Hydrogen to put up!! Think Hindenburg!
I think someone should try it. Must be a way to make a plastic or fiberglass tank large enough to do a frame right? Maybe one of those one piece swiming pools they bring in on a truck and drop in the hole? |

There's nothing like a good idea taken way too far! For what the electricity would cost you could probably get the truck acid dipped.

Very true, maybe use wind power or a huge solar array. Wind is becoming more popular, that might be a good idea for poeple out in the midwest and west. I know they put up 2 huge wind turbines in Morthern MI a few years ago and they are working great. When I was in Germany, they have huge wind farms, but the farmers get huge incentives from the govt. I think there is a company that makes them on a smaller scale for single home use. Could use it to power your entire shop.
