350 TBI engine
Has anyone put a TBI engine in a 67-72, and if so what can be done to get around 300 hp out of one. I am thinking of building one with vortec heads and a stock vortec truck cam shaft with roller rockers and lifters. Also flat top pistons .030 over sized. If anyone has i would like to see a picture of it.

I haven't heard many good things about TBI. If I were you I would go with TPI. The TBI setups end up squirting alot of gas on the butterflys, thus negating the effect of injection. So I've heard.

people only say the bad things about them. they are actually good work engines. my dad has had his since 89 and hes pushed it and not taken very good care of it and hes at 130k with not much trouble. i just saw a supercharger in jegs catalog for the tbi chevys supposed to produe a BUNCH of power

I have three complete engines with harness and computer sitting in my shop and would like to use one in my truck. They all need rebuilding. and two are 4 bolt mains. They are also the new style blocks that accept the oem roller cam and lifters.
I was thinking with vortec heads, flat top pistons, and a roller cam and lifters, along with a holley 670 cfm TBI with a bored intake i should be able to get 300 hp with decent fuel milage. Is this relistic are am i dreaming.

someone will correct me if i'm wrong, but i think they were about 260 horse stock, so if you're doing a block up build, i see no reason you shuouldn't be able to push 300 horse. again, i've seen a lot of TBI engines go the mile without many, if any, problems, and still do decent mileage.

I just finshed replacing the head gaskets on my 88 K1500 with a 5.7L TBI engine. It is the best this puppy has ever ran! I will have to admit that it now has some pretty smooth accelration and fair amount of power. It is no hot rod by far, but I'm pretty happy with it. As a matter of fact I was toying with the idea of building a 71/72 GMC 4x4 with a vortec headed TBI. But that is in the far future.

TBI 350's were rated in the 180-215 net HP range.
TBI is the simplest of the EFI systems. Basically just an electronic carb. It is actually pretty simple to work on, and dead reliable too. But multipoint EFI of some kind will give you much better power and MPG.

I know they are pretty dependable, and fairly efficient. I just wasn't sure about the horsepower i could get out of it. I don't want anything to wild just around 300 hp. I plan on using the truck as a weekend cruiser. I have been down the road of high horsepower with an 86 short bed, fleetside pushing around 450hp. It was fun, but expensive, and not all that reliable. I will continue to look for an TPI or MPI setup while i build the truck. But if i don't find one at a resonable price i think i will try the TBI. Thanks for the input.

Not trying to start anything here, but there IS a difference between:
TBI:Throttle Body injection (Early form, as stated above) CPI:Central port Injection (Used in s10 blazers in 93 and a few other years, and I'm sure on other vehicles) MPI:Multi Port Injection (very good system) TPI:Tuned Port Injection(excellent system I don't claim to know everything, but I do know there is a big difference between these systems. Maybe someone else can offer a little more insight.

If you didn't have a TBI motor already it would be much better ta start with an L98 TPI motor (Z's and Vettes, 86-92) you can pick them up fairly cheap, and they run great, tons of TQ....

the 96-99 truck vortec 5.7 makes 255hp. would`nt take much to get it to 300. my old `99 x-cab had a 5.0 vortec with 235 hp and it was very powerfull. great motors.

'93 TBI in '70
I right in the middle of a '93 TBI motor swap, matched injectors ramp plate, headwork, still undecided on what cam, Byan Herters reprogram... and I bet I'm at a solid 265 hp and getting 16mpg before I've spent $1000 total (including motor). That is why I went with a TBI instead of an overpriced LT1 donor. The optispark on an LT1 and the shear agravation of changing plug wires and dealing with OBDII is for people with deep pockets, lofty goals and nothing but time. But I do love my DGGM '94 b-body in SS trim.

I have run a couple of vortec headed small blocks on TBI! The first one was a stroked 350 with vortec heads it ran extremely strong but was pretty hard to get the bugs out of! It took a year to get it to run as well as the 240k 350 I took out. The second one was in a 95 suburban and it ran decent but the computer made it run rich and I couldn't find the problem. So I took it out of the sub and put a zz4 cam in it with a 650 dbbl pumper and it runs great. now!

PCM location
I have a bracket to locate the PCM above the glove box enclosure. The CEL and data plug are hung next to the ignition. This time I'm using a "Painless kit" ---101. The radiator requires a inlet for the heater core return.
