High Pressure Power Steering Help

Hello,

I'm putting an LQ4 with hydroboost in my 72 GMC. I cut the bottom metric fitting off the high pressure hose that runs from the booster to the gear box. But, I having a tough time finding a steel 3/8 tube 7/16 tube nut. After doing a ton of research, I just ordered a brass one off of amazon (Dorman 785-293). But, I would rather have the steel one. Does anyone have any suggestions outside of buying a new 1972 hose and cutting the fitting off?

Thanks,
Stanley

Re: High Pressure Power Steering Help

DO NOT use a brass compression fitting on the high pressure side of your power steering. You should be able to get ones from any hydralic hose shop that are rated for the pressure. Or you could just have them make an entire hose for you to order, which is what i would reccomend.

Wildkarde, Thank you for the reply. You're the second person to tell me that. I was trying to save some money. It's looking like going to a hose shop is probably the best option. Thanks, man.

I've never dealt with these folks, but I think this is what you want...

dayj1, Thanks you for the reply. I went on Hose Warehouse's site prior to posting my initial question. None of their 3/8 tube size fittings not appear to be the correct one. Thanks.

That fitting that I linked _is_ the fitting that you need. The high pressure hose fitting at the steering gear is 3/8" tube with a 11/16"-18 thread. Maybe you're confused over the 7/16" vs "11/16" part. 7/16" is the "normal" tube size with 11/16"-18 threads (3/8" tube usually has 5/8"-18 thread").

However, if it makes you feel better, it's fine to use a brass tube nut. The tube nut is not the same thing as a compression fitting that you are getting warned about.

And, of course, the possibility exists that I'm just horribly confused over what you want.

dayj1, Thank you, I got confused when I was doing the research on what part I needed. This thread was the only one I could find that made reference to the size. I'll try to find the one you referenced locally and see if I can get this motor running.

Try NAPA part 105x6x7 from the “WH” line. I bought one at my local store a couple years ago.

Re: High Pressure Power Steering Help

Edelmann makes adapter stubs on hardline that can be installed with a flare.

BR3W, Thank you for the reply. Do you have any part numbers? I'm curious to see the adapter.

Re: High Pressure Power Steering Help

FWIW about the Edelmann stubs I mentioned; I don't have a link, but found them by requesting to look at the paper catalog for Napa Power Steering at the store.

Re: High Pressure Power Steering Help

I used lines off of a 96, they fit pretty good and look stock. I also used a newer steering box so it's the 3 1/2 turn lock to lock rather than the old 4 1/2 turn one which also uses metric O ring fittings fo didnt have to reflare the lines any at all.

Re: High Pressure Power Steering Help

Not sure if any of this will help...I used a early 80s hydroboost...a steering box from 88 2wd truck....and a 2003 5.3.....all fittings are o-ring metric...16mm and 18mm threads.....I used a set of hydroboost lines for a 81...fit was great...looks stock..they had to order the other return line so that's why it's not installed in the pic..

Re: High Pressure Power Steering Help

mine clear just fine...I had the inner off in my pic but I had it on to see how it would work..theyll lay right along the curve of the inner...and I have a 3 hose clamp thatll capture all hoses and it fastens to inner fender
