Any 20+gal rear fuel tanks

First let me say that this forum is invaluable. My 71 fleet side long bed is now ready for a rear fuel tank. Is there a 20+ gallon fuel tank that can be put in the frame that can be done WITHOUT notching out the cross sill on the bed?

I have not been able to find any in my research. I really do not want to cut on the bed since it has already been painted.

You've got a pick-up truck. Put a 300 gallon Boyd Welding tank in the bed, put a valve to the lower tank, turn it on when you need to fill it?

That is creative! I was hoping to do this with just one tank and within reason on price. Some where around $200.

I put an EFI swap tank in my 68. Holds 20 gal. Its made for a 1970 chevelle, SPECTRA GM34TFI. There is info in my build thread page 3.

How do you keep the fuel from sloshing out the license plate when you goose it?

Non-vented gas cap. There are 2 vents on the rear of the tank. One is capped and the other is routed to a vent with a couple of loops that exits higher than tank below the bed.

Glad I could help, good luck with your swap!

For additional tanks I can think of 2 options. In cab tank or in bed tank. Then using a 2 tank fuel pump switch of your choice dash mounted should work. You can use a single or dual gauge setup. The switch for fuel pumps mentioned above would also ground out the live sending unit as well so on a single gauge setup only the live tank would send a signal to the gauge. They make kits I'm sure or just wire it up yourself. Several options here with a 7 gauge cluster.

Yep. The early Spectra tanks had issues but I have had no problem with this one and it is baffled. Also run a similar tank in my 64 Chevelle and it has no trouble either also it is baffled. I use the Corvette fuel pressure regulator mounted inside the frame rail above the rear axle.

Re: Any 20+gal rear fuel tanks

Just to have another perspective for anyone who finds this thread. Here is the LMC 21 gallon tank($150) with the TANKS PA-4 kit($236). The PA-4 kit gives you the Walbro 255lph pump, NPT threads to connect to fuel lines that can be easily adapted to AN fittings, and not to mention a baffle tray to prevent fuel starvation. This was the route I ended up going on my build mainly because of the lower cost, large capacity tank, in-tank setup for my LS efi engine, and easy install. The fuel tank baffling tray was just a bonus!

The side fill doesn't interfere with the the frame rail. It fits like a glove and you keep your cross supports. And depending on your setup, you can notch the bed support rail pretty easily to go over the top of the tank without issue. For install details see my build thread.

Total cost = $386

Tank info:

PA-4 info:
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/tnk-pa-4
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...&postcount=105

Cons = Tank hangs lower

Still a lot cheaper than the expensive tanks though!

Re: Any 20+gal rear fuel tanks

I believe the issue with the LMC in-frame tanks is no baffles. That's one of the main reasons I went with a Boyd Welding tank, despite the cost.
