1968 C60 rear outside wheel bearing removal??
I am going to put new bearings in my 68 C60. I have removed the hub from the spindle. My question is, is it normal to have to remove the outer bearing through the back because it won't fit through the housing on the outside? I had to remove the grease seal in the back and then remove the inside bearing and race. Then I removed the large snap ring and drove out the outside bearing race and then removed the outside bearing through the back of the hub. Am I missing something here. The outside bearing won't fit through the outside of the hub where the gear teeth are that the axle fits into. Just doesn't seem right to me but I have never worked on anything other than smaller trucks. Thanks for your help in advance. I really appreciate it.

Re: 1968 C60 rear outside wheel bearing removal??
most full float hubs for rear axles i have played with require the outer bearing to be pressed out with the race threw the back side . some require the back race out to let it clear past .
there should be a snap ring the outer race sits on . to get it out press the outer race off the ring just a bit . then once out press the whole setup out . when going back together make sure to seat the race on the snap ring or when it does move to this point it will loosen up your bearing pre-load setting and you can have problems . lots of guys jack up 1 side and let gear oil drain in to the hub at the wheel . then do the other side to fill that hub . then check the diff oil level . and small road test and recheck oil level .

Re: 1968 C60 rear outside wheel bearing removal??
sweetk30 Thanks so much for the info. You answered my questions completely and I appreciate it. One more thing, the truck has bad spindle threads that are going to be replaced next week but I need to find out where to buy new locking nuts as the old ones on the right side were ruined. Thanks again. People like you make it doable for people like me!

from the other thread i take it you have a service coming out to do a new spindle ? if so they might have new nuts . ask and if not they should know were to get them . otherwise you need to find a big truck parts shop . in my area i have cook brothers and fry heavy duty for 2 shops that deal in med - hd stuff .

Re: 1968 C60 rear outside wheel bearing removal??
sweetk30, Thanks, I will do that. They are going to replace the threads, bearing surface is OK. Previous owner tack welded the outside locking nut to the threads because they were stripped !!
