Were ashtrays painted from the factory, or maybe not?

I'm restoring and painting an original ash tray for my '68. Discounting the front panel, were factory ones painted at all externally and internally? Color? All I have ever seen are ones that are pretty worn and rusted.. Thanks

Thank you, maybe that explains how they get corroded and such and not age well...

Maybe the were stuffed full of burning cigarette butts and ashes, that could have produced some wear patterns

Here are pictures of the top and bottom of the one in my '69. I don't recall ever putting anything in it.

Hmm......When I first read zinc I agreed, but now I'm wondering if they or some are anodized.

I vote... ZINC. I've never heard of anodized steel.

You're right. I thought it had more sheen. I put zinc plated next to it, the appearance is identical.

Re: Were ashtrays painted from the factory, or maybe not?

Mine is just ugly, and the cig snuffer on the front is all bent down - must have seen some hard use! I have another one I bought that is better being delivered today...

I have a bunch that were in a tub that got water in it, so they got ugly and light rust... mostly staining. What do you all think, are they worth sandblasting/priming? What would they be worth ready for paint to match? Fresh and nice don't really bring much anyway. Nobody ever looks at them at the swap meets

I like em. Nice for a restoration. I like how they're built too. You can push & pull to your heart's content, and just stare at it a while Seems a nice one would be worth $40, but what do I know.

Re: Were ashtrays painted from the factory, or maybe not?

My Gmc was white with a Gold vinyl interior and my ashtray was painted Sandalwood from the factory before I let my buddy paint it black. Wish I never did that. Never seen another one with that color.

Looks like I have built a small collection myself - will probably clean up all I have acquired..

Re: Were ashtrays painted from the factory, or maybe not?

The ash tray out of a 72 is the best, it doesn't have ball bearings. I put one in my 71 i use to own and wish I had another one. You have to change the whole thing track and all but they work a lot smoother.
