options for SBC motor mounts
The last time I took the 350 engine out for rebuild, I went up to O'Reilly and they looked up the motor mount on the computer for a 1969 C10 pickup, and sold me the mounts across the counter.
I had a difficult time getting the center bolt in, the one that goes up through the mount bracket attached to the truck frame. It took patience and persistence and I eventually got it. I did chase the threads. Also, I don't have the recall kit that secures the engine if the motor mount breaks. Are they any different style motor mounts that are easier to install and/or have safety against failure built in? Are recall kits for trucks with A/C reproduced, or something else that is suitable to do the same thing? |

You mention "I'm thinking it will be a smart idea to install some limiting straps like the factory did so I don't have to do this again." Can you tell me more about that? What do they look like, and where do you get those. I'm thinking that is the recall kit that I was talking about, so the factory did not do that in 1969 and they sent kits to the dealers, is that right? I have seen some listed for sale from time to time but they are for non-A/C trucks. I have not seen one actually installed and don't know what they look like when installed. You said "The Pontiac style is so much quicker to install." Are you talking about the new mount with the flange on the bottom that you installed? Or something else that is a completely different style and will not work on our trucks? What do you grind to make the bolt easier to tighten, and in what way does it help to do that? |

I'm assuming by recall kits, you were referring to the engine hold down kits that were available for the 1967-68 trucks. I'm attaching some photos of how those kits were installed. I believe they were issued due to the earlier trucks having a solid accelerator rod, that could jam if the motor mounts were broken and when the engine torqued under acceleration, it could cause the accelerator rod to stick and not allow it to come back to idle. If you have a later model with an accelerator cable, it shouldn't be an issue.

Yes, that is probably it. 1969 has the solid rod for throttle. So if the motor mount breaks loose there is a potential for problem.

The kits that fb111ewo talked about is what I called limiting straps. I have a partial set if you are interested. I thought I could use them on my Burban but I have headers and it will be cleaner to make my own as opposed to modification of the factory ones. So at this point they are just taking up space.
The "Pontiac style" I referred to then is what I have since learned is what the squarebody trucks use. It may be possible to convert to them I have not tried to. I'm sure they have a better name than "Pontiac style" it is where I'm used to seeing them.

That looks interesting to me. I didn't know it was possible to do something like this. I don't see how a tie down is built in, there does not appear to be anything to keep the engine down if the metal-rubber-metal sandwich fails.

I went with the poly mounts they say specifically new interlocking design eliminating separation . the rubber ones dont say it so im unsure about those but in my opinion and only my opinion theyre worth it . 5 years problem free so far
