New steering wheel
I’m in the need of a new steering wheel
I have a 67 with no power steering and want advice on the aftermarket wheel that would have the horn working, maybe a grant or a billet How big a wheel do I need to have manual steering functioning properly I’m not really a big fan of the stock wheels |

Re: New steering wheel
Workout power steering, it might be a bit of a struggle without the larger diameter wheel. I am also guilty of needing a smaller diameter wheel (gut room), but I don’t think it’ll be helpful if you don’t have power steering

Re: New steering wheel
Try and find a late model 60's car steering wheel. There are many to choose from. With the right hub you will have a great looking wheel and yes a horn that works.
Here are ones I have used. My 71 C 10 has a 67 Chevelle wheel I did myself. I wrapped it with leather. The next one is a 80's model Corvette wheel in my Ramp truck then a 64 SS Impala stock wheel I did and a 67 SS Impala simulated wood wheel I re finished all these wheels myself. I have a 3 spoke Corvette Wheel going in my daughter's 68 step side. There are way better selections than Grant wheel's in my opinion.

Re: New steering wheel
You talking about the 2 spoke wood handle wheel in my last picture? It does look black in some of the pictures.

Re: New steering wheel
When you put the Chevelle steering wheel on your 71 C10 did you have to modify anything other than drill a new horn pin hole?
Thx, Dave. |

No the Chevelle wheel was a direct bolt on with the right horn parts. The 2 spoke horn buttons work also.

Re: New steering wheel
The car wheels in the '60s were only slightly smaller than the pickup wheels. There were a lot of cars w/o power steering back then, too.

Re: New steering wheel
I bought my c10 with a 12 inch go kart steering wheel on it, you can imagine how hard is to steer with no Power steering
How Big were Stock wheels, about 17 inches? |

They fit either standard are tilt column but depending on which one you have you have to get the right parts for it to go inside the hub for the horn to work.

Re: New steering wheel
MY favorite Uncle had a new '60 Impala when I was about 9. I've always liked these wheels. I think it's the same diameter as the stock wheel... 19". I wish it was smaller. My buddy found this one at a show in Ga. awhile back. The hub diameter matches the column very well and it was blue. I shortened the steering column to gain some belly room. Moved the wheel closer to the dash. It's pretty comfortable, I can steer with either hand resting my elbows on the door arm rest on my center console.

Re: New steering wheel
I recently added this grant real wood wheel to my 70. Keep your eyes posted on craigslist or FB marketplace. I scored this one for $30!
It' s a 15" wheel and would be good for a manual steering setup.

Re: New steering wheel
.
Good looking wheels! As for the diameter for use with manual steering...as long as the wheel is solid and it's grip material is strong enough to take the pressure of your hands and arms...you can go as small as your muscles allow. The car wheels from the era fit the bill pretty good. -klb
